Nothing more boring then the “I told you so crowd” when it comes to player signings.

I think most of us always thought it was a long shot.

Now we have a war chest. Hopefully a great start to the year makes us more attractive to potential suitors.

There’s no point in pretending that this isn’t a major blow for the Tigers. It absolutely is as we have no half back signed for 2024 and very little on the market.

Also why were Tigers players allowed to comment openly on Moses potentially coming to the Tigers a couple of weeks ago when the whole thing was clearly in the balance.

We clearly have a long way to go to reach any level of competence.

Should they have offered him $1.6M pa? Parra had to match our offer to keep him. i think that indicates that Moses was coming if they didnt.

There's no other elite 7 available

George Williams is the only other real option, but Sheens may feel that Brooks is just as good and already here.

In that case, I would be looking for an elite fullback - with welbsy top target.

Imagine back three of:

1. Welsby

2. Junior

5. Bula

Top 8 2023

I’m not sure of the details of what we offered Moses but it was imperative we closed the deal as there is simply no one else available.

So yes I would have offered more money or a longer contract or even both.

not sure I could sleep well knowing we were paying Moses $1.5-$1.6pa. you raised the topic of competence. Im not sure making Mitchell moses the highest paied player in the comp by that much for that long implies competence. It was reported today our offer was $1.3pa, to me thats about max. Reportedly Parra had to pay him $1.25Mpa so we did our job and maxed out their cap. IMO Tigers have dealt with this pretty well.

Agree

but if WT come out tomorrow and announce they have signed their Plan B (I.e George Williams) then they have nailed it.

If they have no idea what to do next, then that's a worry

And if Benji comes out of retirement to play 7 - then that's just WT at our best 😉

  • @tiger5150 Parra have a lot of money tied up in there halves .. the club has done the right thing by sticking to the offer made .If you get in a bidding war and lose then you have been bent over ! I am wondering if there was not a plan B in play all along ! The club would have known he was not keen ..

I mentioned competence in relation to WT players being allowed to speak freely about Moses coming to the club at a time when negotiations were clearly at a crucial stage.

According to Chammas we offered 1.3M over four years and if that’s the case I wouldn’t have lost any sleep in offering 1.4M with an extra year which would have been significantly higher than the Parra bid.

So we did a good job in maxing out the Parra cap, do we get competition points for that. We have no one signed for 2024 for arguably the most important position in the team and that’s not a great position to be in.

Agree that apart from Api at hooker we have short term issues to address with our spine and definite lack of star quality at fullback and half position.
However paying Moses well overs at $1.3M, $1.4M or suggested $1.5M is not the answer. Firstly you need to try and remember the fact that he has serious flaws in his game ….. and when things get tough he goes missing. I agree that his game has improved under Arthur coaching both in attack and more importantly in defence where he was turnstile in past years ……. but let’s face it he is no Cleary, Haynes, Munster, Hughes, Dale Cherry Evens, Reynolds and even Hunt.

He is also 28 so no spring chicken, free of major injuries to date and both those things don’t argue well for the future unless you rely on luck alone. What I’m getting at I suppose is to say that although I dislike the guy with a passion he would have been a nice pickup at-a reasonable $900-$1M for about 3 years with perhaps some incentives and TPAs built in the deal. But that’s it ….. we have some promising juniors on line in about 3-4 years and money available for some emerging star signings over next two seasons. Players who come out of nowhere like Reuben Cotter, Jeremiah Nanai, Sam Walker, Joseph Suaalii, Selwyn Cobbo etc

We are in a middle of a rebuild with some key components already in place and other local emerging talent in evidence. That’s a positive and having savvy well credentialed coaching and recruitment people actively in player market with a stack of poker chips available is a definite positive for me rather than crying over some spilled milk recruitment episode.

@jedi-tiger that’s fine mate . If we were at 1.3 and they drifted from 1 to 1.2 then that’s all good for us .

You never know this might have been the rocket guys like AD and brooks needed .
I rate them both . AD in defence , well AD next to Ice in defence , looked daylight to last year . If that’s been rectified now , which it might have , then I can see AD playing origin this year if he plays to his potential .
If talakai could get a run last year then there’s definitely a spot in the centres waiting for him if he has a boom year .

and if the forwards go forward and cause compression out wide , I can see brooks having a field day against staggered lines .
Moses has been a flat track bully for a while now .
we might get the opportunity this year for the first time in 10 years , where our halves can get a chance to be the same .

@the-frog it’s 3.2 if you include Gutho . Chuck in the 1.5 mil they’re paying for their starting from row , and it’s going to get real tough next year for them .

I’m fine with Moses coming or staying. I think if they miss out they’d already be looking at other players who could make the team better. What I don’t understand is this talk of “is he worth it” or “I don’t want him to be the highest paid player in the game”. This is without seeing the results of your investment. If the results make you a better team, say you make a GF or win a premiership what then? If you still fail to make finals or top 4, yes it’s a bad investment. With every investment comes risk. The success of the investment can only be measured by the results.

I think you can still win a comp without a star 7 running the show. Are the Roosters a chance this year? Walker is a very promising half, good right now but I wouldn’t think he’s in the best top six in the NRL. Kleary is very good but has other issues. What they have is a very good pack, a very good dummy half and an elite fullback. I think a club can go far in this comp if they have that. But there are only a few elite fullbacks around. If you can add a star half to that then you’re definitely going places.
