Sheens looks set to be announced next week, I'm guessing Robbie as an assistant

I reckon to be the successor too.

Robbie could be the next Bellamy. Has the footy smarts and fire in the belly.

People complained madge hadn't moved on from 2014

2005 is another world

Very similar style of football to what has been played the last couple of years, though the game is slowing down again now. Madge has shown no ability to adapt, Sheens won 4 premierships spread across 2 decades. Sheens has a coaching tree that extends far and wide. It is unfair on Madge to compare the 2, they aren't even in the same class.

Are you talking about the same Sheens who last coaching gig was Widnes a town of 60k in the 2nd division in UK and only lasted 7 games?

😉

And you were talking about a coach who in his last coaching gig took a side on the fringe of the 8 and turned them into a side contending for the spoon.

My post was just pointing out how people were complaining that Madge wasn't up with 2022 - and so that complaint could be used at Sheens as well given he hasn't coached in NRL for 10 years.

But if you want to compare madge and Sheens

Sheens 2003-2012 - 10 seasons - 250 games - 49% win rate -    3 finals -  1 premiership

Madge 2012-2021 - 9 1/2 seasons - 233 games - 49% win rate -   4 finals - 1 premiership

So over a 10 year period madge has made the finals 4 out of 9 full seasons- where Sheens made it 3 out of 10

Was Sheens a bad coach those 7 years and a great coach for 3? Or was it that we were missing a halfback? Or some class etc?

Top 8 2023

I think no matter who gets the coaching position at the club, out of the possible contenders, there will be criticism of that decision. We can almost take that as Gospel now because a significant portion of the fan base are disillusioned with the failure of the NRL team. It’s understandable too. But we don’t know all the pieces that need to be put into place yet, how long? who will be assisting, the pathways positions? how it will effect recruitment? the whole nuts & bolts of the structure going forward. I doubt any appointment at this stage, outside of Bellamy, would bring the fan base together. That’s a real problem in my mind as a young coach would find that pressure from the fan base, and the media will jump onto it quick smart, difficult to deal with. Sheens has so much experience in that regard he’ll know how to deal with it better than a younger coach.  Anyway, now, for me anyway, that’s a huge plus. Bloody hell, he’s even got Buzz onside although how long that’ll last is anyone’s guess.

@snake Madge is unable to adapt

Sheens is an educator he will assist Kimmorley and Farah and do a good job.

we might even attract a good player you never know

Here is the team Sheens had at his disposal in 2003 when taking over.

Joel CAINE
Mark O'HALLORAN
Daniel FITZHENRY
Terry HILL
Robert MILES

Michael BUETTNER
Lincoln WITHERS

Corey PEARSON
Darren SENTER (c)
John SKANDALIS
Anthony LAFFRANCHI
Mark O'NEILL
Ben GALEA

Nick BRADLEY-QALILAWA
Chris HEIGHINGTON
Chris PATERSON
Troy WOZNIAK

And here it the team Maguire had at his disposal in 2012.

1 Greg INGLIS
2 Nathan MERRITT
3 Matt KING
4 Dylan FARRELL
5 Andrew EVERINGHAM

6 John SUTTON (c)
7 Adam REYNOLDS

8 Sam BURGESS
9 Nathan PEATS
10 Roy ASOTASI
11 Eddy PETTYBOURNE
12 Dave TAYLOR
13 Michael CROCKER (c)

14 Jason CLARK
15 Luke BURGESS
16 Chris McQUEEN
20 Issac LUKE

Both coaches won the premiership in their 3rd season. WT were operating under the salary cap when they won in 2005. Losing Prince and not recruiting another strong halfback was why the WT were unable to repeat success. They should have won at least one premiership in 2010 and 2011 and if Tedesco hadn't been injured in 2012 I feel we would have made the finals in 2012 too.

Contrast that to Maguire who inherited a strong side (just like Wigan) with very strong leaders in Inglis, Burgess and Asotasi. After winning the premiership in 2014 he scraped into the finals in 2015 (knocked out first round) and then finished 12th in 2016 and 12th in 2017 with a team that included the Burgess brothers, Inglis, Keary, Cook, Crichton, Cody Walker, Alex Johnston, Nathan Brown and Cam McInnes.

Maguire's early success came from luck in taking over ready made sides. Over time his true ability started to show. Let's remember Seibold took his exact 2017 roster and took them to third.

One thing I do think is that the delay is due to us waiting to hear someone’s answer.

I reckon that ship might have sailed. I think Sheens will be coach, I think he's probably just deciding how much to pay himself lol

Nothing is coming out of the club. It's the complete opposite of what was going on with Ciraldo. Any of the updates I have read in the past 2 days have been pure speculation.

There is not even talk about person X, person Y, person Z being interviewed. Leads me to conclude that there is something at play. The Sheens stuff is crap

I hope you are about the Sheens stuff. He needs to continue to focus on pathways and football operations where he adds value. Coaching at NRL level is a different beast.

I would prefer someone else so Tim can focus on his current role. But I get the feeling that no one else (decent) is interested. There are a lot of coaches around but geez...pretty uninspiring choices.

Any coach that is signed is a gamble with how much of a bizarre situation the club is in. It could take an experienced coach who can withstand the pressure or a young coach who can relate to the young guys. Throw whatever cliche you want at it. We won't know who is the right coach until a fair way into their tenure.

The only way that Sheens being appointed coach can work is if the following happens;

-Sheens signs another couple of really good players (NOT Nathan Browns)

-WT appoint a really good GM of football

-WT make the semi finals 2023

-WT jag a really good coach within a couple of seasons

And how likely is this? Very unlikely IMO, which is why I've already said that going with Sheens to find success is a pipe dream.

And while I would love that to work, this is more likely;

-Sheens signs a bunch of Nathan Brown type players

-WT finish between 12-14th in 2023

-Sheens resigns in 2024 with club again running 14th

-Farah takes over as coach...

Could we even survive this as a club? Maybe not, which is why I hope this Sheens thing is a smokescreen.

Have to say after watching the segment on 360 tonight with Benji and discussion related to him being a possible option as a future coach in training under Tim I can honestly say I was impressed.
