@russtutty63 I’m with you there, and the good thing is that Benji will be keeping a keen eye on what’s developing junior wise.In the here and now the ambition is obviously to win the competition and that requires particular pieces to the jigsaw. As long as objectivity of the long term,is not being overruled by the overriding desire to win in the short term. We’ve just experienced the worst long-term salary cap turmoil, surely we don’t want to regress to that again. It was the long-term contracts that put us in the poo to start with. The player managers could smell our desperation and took us for a long ride,as well as to the cleaners.

I think the salary cap drama came from a reaction to losing Woods,
Tedesco & Moses. The club, and I include every supporter, wanted action once those players were gone. But there was no long term vision at that time, just a need to get in the market quickly to fill the gaps and give Ivan a good, competitive team. It almost paid off, 12 wins would’ve generally seen the club play finals but not that year. But it was a short term fix and didn’t address the greater systemic problems the club had been dealing with for some time previously, the problems still remained.

if Ivan stayed I think he would have turned the club around and we would of become a semi final side

On the topic of halfbacks , anyone who was lamenting the loss of Hastings after last nights game , can absolutely sleep easy .
as soon as Ponga went down , that team had no attack whatsoever. And I’ll argue that once the warriors figured out the knights attack was basically pass it to ponga , then it was handled real quick .
hastings offers no threat at all . He just shuffles it on 3 times a set and kicks a meh kick !
It’s strange to me this obsession with organisation . To the detriment of everything else .
Lachie Millar had to step up because Hastings didn’t offer anything .
that’s a huge problem when you have a guy like ponga who can get injured pretty often .
Regardless of how we go this year . I’m adamant the club has made the right decision on this .

But he yells and points a lot = organiser apparently

@tiger5150 Hastings should be that ball playing 13, too slow for a 7

Still think Newcastle run last

I dont think he is that either. Too slow and small. look at the gun 13's like Murray, Yeo. Hastings isnt in their league.

Even at 13 I dont think Hastings would have fit in the pack that Sheens is putting together and would simply be another half on the field and weakened our pack. We need our pack to fire and really stand up and much happier to have Pole or Joffa there. In this team we dont need a "ball playing"13 because I think Sheens will be building a "ball playing" 1 to 17.

I found this interesting

Former WT fringe** players, in others teams round 1.

Luke Garner - 11 panthers

Nu Brown - 13 Bulldogs

Billy Walters - 9 Broncos

Kelma Tuilagi - 12 Manly

Jackson Hastings - 7 Newcastle

Jimmy Tamou - 17 Cowboys

Michael Chee Kam - 15 South's (played starting 2nd row)

Plus plenty more at St George (Mybe, Musgrave, Liddle)

It's not that they were bad players, they can exist in a 17, you just can't have a entire 17 of that standard like we have had over the last 10 years.

**By fringe, I mean they never were 100% guaranteed for their preferred position at WT.

@tiger5150 kinda think Jacko could be a good 9 I reckon. 6,7,9 or 13 I love his smarts on the field. He’s a competitor and that’s no1 in my eyes.

Your list is a bit out going by your own definition of fringe:

Nu Brown sees himself as a dummy half

Billy Walters was a 5/8 who Brisbane have converted to a 9

Tamou was captain of the club and starting front rower

Chee Kam has been in and out of that Souths side more than when he was with us

Tuilagi was starting second rower for most of the season

Trent Robinson said that was his future position and best suited to when he was at the Roosters until it all went south.

I only rate Liddle out of that lot and even he was very ordinary last year

Did you see what Brooks just dished up, that was disgraceful, no way we re-sign him either

Leichhardt, what a myth, just like Brooks, 3 wins from our last 11 games there, 4 straight losses to the Titans there, time to move on and find one home ground
