Not happy about the response we got from the club regarding the re-signing of Stefano as mentioned by Steve in the latest edition of the podcast.
The longer this goes on the more you have to think something is going on that might not be good news for us.
I'm happy to give them to the start of the season but this is a signing that they must get over the line.
If the situation was looking good that would have been hinted at. That response can’t be good.
The club can be quite coy when answering questions about signings, I actually find them more open when things are going poorly in negotiations.

I hope you’re right Garry, losing Stefano would rival the loss of Tedesco imo.

As I said in the pod, the signings for next year mean nothing if we lose Stef.

Could be Stefano backing himself to push his $$$ value up even further after 5-6 rds of NRL .....

Yeah could be, I think this is a must get signing and would be willing to push his value up anyway right now.

Hopefully we’re not trying to lowball him.

I hope not as well, as long as he isn't asking for something stupid I would give him what he wants.

I'm not worried about Stefano. Sure it's good if he stays but he is a prop forward and isn't worth marquee player dollars.

I think from the Club's perception, we have to try and keep him.
Agreed, we shouldn't be offering stupid money, but for him not the accept a reasonable offer, I think it will paint the Club in a bad light.

Game is changing. Props to the level of Stef are critical in successful teams and we havent had good ones for a long time (ever?)

Disagree. Tedesco was a once in a generation player when he left. At the moment Stef is a player who has 3 good months.
Not knocking the kid but really would not blame the club for a bit of wait and see if he wants real top dollar. Couple of weeks round 5 or 6 if he starts like he finished...

I really believe Stefano will be in the top couple of props in the game within the next 18 months, he is not a player we can afford to lose.

Oh don't get me wrong, he was very impressive and the sky could be the limit. However, if he wanted 900k for instance...are we better of paying it or getting 2 good props for the same money? I'm just looking it from a squad building point of view too.
I'm probably on the Wayne Bennett side of you spend only so much on the bookends.
@kiwitiger I think it’s as much about what it will do for the perception of the club that one of the best young players in the nrl has decided to extend. If he decides to go, it will be another great player who has experienced the club and doesn’t have confidence in its future.
and btw, I hope Stef stays more than anything, but if I was him I’d be tempted to go elsewhere.. can’t blame him really.

To me this is the litmus test to whether the club is really changing or stuck in the endless cycle we have been in for the past decade. Stefano needs to be convinced this is the place to be to further his career and signed on a deal that both he and the club are happy with. If we fail to do this we aren't building our roster through the signings of Api and Papali'i, we are just replacing players we have leaving. Our roster is terrible and we need to start building, not signing players only to lose a better player a couple of months later.
