Reasons to be Cheerful - Part 2

The thread title got me excited for a minute.

Wouldn't it be awesome if we had a successful football team so we can point to the score board and not winge about the board and the media slamming us all the time... I'm really over it to be honest. I'm purposely shutting out the external noise and I don't care if that's wrong.

Even my 40yr old daughter and grandkids bag me about the tigers.

Yes, yes, yes, I'm one of the many dumb loyal supporters who helps pay via my membership to fund this disaster.

However I won't budge and am loyal. I have black, white and gold blood running through my veins. Medical staff take note in case I need a transfusion one day.

I also realised a couple of years ago that there's more to life than football, well at least in commercial breaks and at half time. 🤣🍺

We're one loss closer to the realisation that Sheens and his merry band of sidekicks are an impediment to the development, performance and reputation of WT NRL.

At this point I’m cheerful that we have the bye and will have some time to plan what we are going to do with the Naden and Doueihi’s positions.

We are still a long way off the pace but a bit of time for reflection from all involved in the club may be helpful.

Our next few games:

Manly - have been leaking points and now without Tommy T

Panthers - no comment

St George - have been hot and cold

Souths - no comment

Cowboys - have come back to the pack and are not playing well.

We could potentially jag a win in those games if the coaching staff and players make a few changes to our game over the bye week.

Nick Campton is by far and away my favourite writer/journalist. He gets footy and gets footy fans.

But that article almost made me cry.

We have made a heap of progress in upgrading the roster and whilst it’s easier to do that in the forwards than the backs it is a pre requisite to recruiting marquee spine players.

The 7/1 are probably not in the club at the moment but given the salary cap position we have I assume we will be able to fill those gaps when the next marquee kid reveals himself (most teams have now locked in long term marquee players in these positions aside from maybe the bulldogs). Perhaps somewhat controversial but I would be happy with brooks at 6 for the next few years, I don’t think he was that different in contribution from Dylan brown yesterday, it’s just that brown had Moses doing everything for him and he just had to defend well and chime in if he saw something. Also I think brooks will be on a relatively modest salary for his next contract and most players that we could recruit like wighton would probably command twice brooks salary.

the outside backs I assume you just populate with the best of the athletes from the lower grades. They are probably no more than 12/18months away (Bula on the wing and perhaps Feledy into centre).

I would say the above implies you need representative quality 7 and 1 and given our cap position that is achieveable. There are no rep level 7 or 1s on the market for 2024 but given the relative salary cap position it seems likely to UK or perhaps rugby (RTs) offer some options. I’d say the above leads me to think Williams is the ultimate recruit now for 24, just pay the transfer fee and make it happen. It’s possible we might find a 1 in the domestic competition given how incentivised it is for players to transform themselves from and outside back into a fullback given relative salaries. A guy like the Hammer was sitting on the bench for the cowboys and he’s been a revolution at the dolphins. I don’t want a Blake taafe or a Jayden Campbell, I think you need a big tall athletic player at the back in the modern game. RTS would be perfect given his experience and leadership but from what I’ve heard he is most likely to go to the sharks to play for Fitzgibbon. I’d be happy to take will Kennedy from the sharks if that were the case. The point being there is only 17 NRL clubs and if you want a pay day there is only so many marquee players that can fit in the strongest clubs. Aside from bulldogs and perhaps the dragons there are not really any clubs that haven’t locked down their 1/6/7 to long term deals which puts us in a great position to complete our rebuild.

Great read, thanks for posting mate.

The worst thing about AD and Nado's injuries,  I thought the side was started to gel. The pack has been rebuilt and everyone has to get used to it... I think that was starting to happen.

Now we have 2 crucial injuries that will no doubt unsettle us and the media will call us a shambles.

I don't know about you guys but I was actually excited at the end of the game regardless of the loss.

We finally had a glimpse of what to expect from the team when they put it all together.

Sign an extension Junior Tupou ASAP 🙏

If you dig deeper into that stat, we have only lead for 15 mins the entire season. That was the first game against the Titans, penalty goal by Doeuhi..
