@tigertownsfs maybe so, but he’s been doing what he’s doing for almost 30 years. Marshall has zero experience. Zero.

I’m drinking the cool aid. I think Benji will be a great coach.

I was more confident in that this time last year.

“In our [coaching] team Robbie [Farah] looks after the attack, John [Morris] looks after the defence, Chris [Heighington] will do the forwards and our effort areas and I’ll oversee the overarching theme of the way we want to play.

“Other than that, I let them do their jobs and have their say. They’re very experienced and very good at what they do. You don’t wanna overdo it but again, I also don’t want to come in and become a head coach and do it someone else’s way.

“I wanna do it the way I wanna do it. The way I see it working is the way I’m gonna do things.”

terrifying

In what way

in the way that our club has been declining for 10 years, has won consecutive wooden spoons, hasn’t strengthened the roster significantly, lost money last year, has a totally dis functional board that just sacked the coach a year early and thrown ALL its eggs in the basket of a totally unqualified, inexperienced coach who is in turn putting our rubbish roster who has proven they can’t play totally in the hands of two assistant coaches who also have no experience and proudly explain that they aren’t a head coach. THAT kind of terrifying.

I do trust in Marshall even if many others don’t

Thats fine. Why?

Exactly. We got a good look at what a Benji coached team looks like last year. I dont see where the improvement comes from?

Hope is he can fully implement what he wants now and that is what takes us to new levels but the evidence isn't there for that yet.

Even if Morris is the only one who has the experience, if he can be successful in tightening our defence we win more games than the last 2 years. We also have to have a more creative and organised halves pairing than most of 2023 as well.

I want to believe!

5152 if you have a look at my previous post I gave a couple of reasons. It seems we have both made up our minds about Marshall and we’re on opposite sides of the fence and that’s fine we both support the same team and in the end want the same thing. Success

Respectfully disagree here.

In one of the few post game press conferences that Benji took towards the end of the year he said that his views on playing style are quite different to Tim. I might try and dig it up.

I thought that was very interesting. He was a flamboyant player but I think Benji will borrow more from the Wayne Bennett playbook which I will produce a more conservative playing style particularly in the first 20 mins of matches (which might have also been referenced in the press conference).

If you compare this to Sheenius interviews from February this year, there was plenty of talk about throwing the ball around and creativity but it was clear from round 1 that this was not going to work.

Did you see any evidence of us "throwing it around" from round 1 this year? The team didnt look like a "Sheens coached" team at any point last year IMO. Benji was obviously coaching post Sheens sacking and unfortunately I suspect that he had a very large input prior as well.

Hope Im wrong but I doubt there will be much change.

@mickb I was under the impression Marshall was running most of the sessions all year, with Sheens doing 1 on 1 stuff. Imo 2024 will be a continuation of last year. Extremely likely we get the spoon again

I recall in the early rounds a fair bit of ball movement from side to side with limited go forward. I may be wrong as we are talking games from March/April.

Marshall as a head coach has big question marks over all aspects of the job. Time will tell how it all plays out but it’s very much a Hail Mary play.

@tiger5150 I dont know if I am answering your point re players being told to throw it around -

This was the messaging from the coach publicly in February 2023

image

https://www.weststigers.com.au/news/2023/02/28/behind-the-roar-episode-2-with-tim-sheens/

Then I reckon you might enjoy the Api podcast with Isaac John where he goes into this in a lot of detail

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-lRRVNThwM

40.10 - 'a lot of our game plan at the start of the year was free flowing footy'

42.10 - we didnt have the 'right footy in place' in terms of style and by that I can only assume he is referring to bullshit run around plays involving prop forwards that were an awful idea that never worked. Whether these are a Sheens tactic or not I don't know.

42.30 - Api says that he should have spoken up earlier to change the game plan because his view is that 'if you want to beat Penrith you need to do what they do and just do it better."

44.20 - when asked about Sheens and Benji coaching style. He says that Sheens likes to play a style 'with a lot of passing the ball but we didnt have the Benji type player to execute for us.'

Benji by comparison is 'the opposite, really strategic" and he goes on to say that benji favours building momentum by kicking to the corners in the first 20 mins.

Benji himself explains this from 2.55 after the Dolphins win

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H_n4y5qXow

These comments from Benji and Api should give us all reason to hope. The players do seem united and they tried very hard in every game in 2023. The losses mounted because of poor coaching and of course poor combinations / lack of talent in key positions. I think that every player seems to speak so positively about benji as a coach and that might also give us more reason to believe in 2024.

@avocadoontoast im probably just trying to find reasons to be overtly positive but I think there is another interview with Api somewhere and he talks about sitting in the coaches box when he broke his jaw. The interviewer asks him 'who is pulling the strings up there? it looks like benji because he has the headset on."

Api says 'No, no its Sheensy giving the messages to Benji who relays them down to the field."

You still make a valid point because no team in the history of the NRL would have ever started a season with 10+ rookies in the top 30 squad. That is straight up crazy recruitment.

When injuries hit we'll get hammered just like in the final around against Manly. Rolling out those rookies was a dumb call.

Was very expansive in the first couple of games, they then rejigged the attack to a much simple structure which led us to going very simple and forward dominated which saw us dominate the yardage but unable to score once inside the redzone.

That’s how I recall it as well. I’m willing to give Benji the benefit of the doubt that the game plan wasn’t controlled by him last season

I'm willing to give Benji a shot, just have no idea how this will turn out, our only hope is that he a messiah for a second time.
