I wonder if this means the private equity holders will take a share of gate revenue

You would think so.

New NSW Sports Minister Steve Kamper said he was looking forward to seeing the proposals.

“We understand that the Inner West Council are developing a masterplan for Leichhardt Oval and intend to present an official submission to the NSW Government,” the minister said.

“We look forward to receiving the submission from Inner West Council.”

…. sounds somewhat promising….

Lee Hagipantelis tells @VossyBrandySEN: The @WestsTigers Board has ratified a proposal in relation to our home grounds for next season. 5 games will be played at Leichhardt, 5 at Campbelltown, 1 in Tamworth and Magic Round is a home game

very happy to see it is an EVEN distribution of games between LO & CSS

we are too far down the rabbit hole to have one venue have more games than the other, the future is not only solely at LO inner west or CSS south west but combined.

So the hot air talk about not playing at Leichhardt after 2023, due to no longer being suitable for professional sport, was just that hot air.

Well I think the added commitment from the Wests Tigers to play out of these grounds will aid the chase for funding you would think.

Maybe the PE comment was sabre rattling so the Council stops dragging its heals. But the Council could still own the ground, PE step in to take a long term ground lease and fund the improvements in exchange for gate takings and rent from teams using the ground. Not sure if the numbers would stack but i'd expect any PE firm would need to generate an exponential increase in the usage of the ground in order to get a return. PE firms usually like to come in for a short to medium term period - boost revenue and therefore enterprise value and get out. Its easier said than done and there have been a lot of failures. Sport is difficult and I believe Archer took a bit of a bath when they exited Supercars.

I think this is a good move, but how does Lee know we have a home game at Magic Round? Has the draw been done?

Nope. The State govt will just ignore, Lee & the local council. The State & Fed government’s spending priorities are elsewhere. While ever it is used there is no incentive to upgrade.

The pressure will come when a valuable asset is not being used due to not being fit for purpose. The only possible exception is if there is a major incident at the ground and people are seriously injured or killed. Even then the blame will be put on the local council for not maintaining the ground to a sufficient level.

I can’t really see how PE involvement would work. Inner west council recently bought a commercial building in Liverpool as an “investment” so presumably if it made economic sense to renovate LO for commercial gain they would just develop it themselves. LO is a community asset so privatising it, particularly in a Green dominated local area just seems highly unlikely. Remember the uproar from the NIMBYs when the redevelopment of Callan park, not to mention the Balmain Tigers rozelle sight. In general I see Darcy as a politician who uses LO investment as a political tool to show he is fighting for the local area when in fact he wouldn’t support a major redevelopment IMHO given how the NIMBYs would behave

Agree. I'd like to see any money spent on LO to concentrate on compliance and safety. I'd hate to see it turn into some modern edifice and lose its uniqueness.
