It is telling that the teams with the worst stadiums have significantly lower earnings. If you are $5-10m a year worse off, every single year, it will result in poor long term outcomes.

As a LO fan it pains me to say this and post this link, but this whilst this article doesnt really address it, if you look at the teams at the bottom of this list of financial success off the field, all the teams have a common link at the moment and that is they are usingsmaller suburban grounds as home grounds.

Would love to know if those AFL revenue figures include AFL/Media grants? Clearly the NRL ones dont.

it's almost guaranteed that you have a membership if you support an AFL team and live in Victoria, Adelaide and WA. I remember when storm came in, all my friends in Melbourne immediately bought memberships, and NRL was not a sport they really followed. It's just hard-wired in them as a way to show support.

AFL clubs have always had better attendances than NRL clubs, but they've been ahead of the curve as well. Moved away from suburban grounds a long time ago, and this get a lot more incoming in terms of gate receipts and corporate support.

Their situation is also obviously helped by Melbourne's geography and the fact that they have two large and modern stadia basically on the edge of the CBD.

We have a brand new modern stadium on the edge of the CBD but some people don’t want to use it because of its location. Ridiculous really.

Wouldn’t take much to put other logos on there as well. Already has Rugby and some other logo I forget.

I would also argue that as a spectacle an afl game is more attractive live than on TV, it's hard to cover the whole field on a TV screen because afl players are scattered over a wide area whereas rugby league is mainly a line of defence and a line of attack that fit perfectly onto a rectangular screen. As a sports fan I never really understood the game until I watched it live. It also goes for much longer than an nrl game so it's a day out for fans, I have always had an issue with the fact nrl don't load up game days with more entertainment to make it a worthwhile day out, especially with kids.

The new SFS would be my preferred option if we’re talking a purely selfish perspective. One train into Central and then a walk or tram ride over to Moore Park. So easy.

We would as a club however be battered from pillar to post about being a Western Sydney team that doesn’t play west of the CBD.

So, great ground but not a realistic option unfortunately.
