West Tigers co-captain Adam Doueihi has signalled a shift in the club’s attitudes, claiming they must fix their losing mentality to compete with the NRL’s best.
The 23-year-old half will likely make a return mid-season after suffering an ACL injury in the club’s Round 23 clash against the Sharks in 2021.
Although he sat out of the Tigers Round 1 loss to the Storm, Doueihi said that it was a game his side should have won, leading by 12 points with only 20 minutes to go.
“It’s just one of those games we had to win,” Doueihi said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“60 minutes in, we were up by 12 points, and they had a few injuries during the game.
“Looking back on it after the game, it was a very disappointing result for us, that was our chance to win.
“We have to go on with it and not make silly errors.
“They are the things that kill us.
“Extremely disappointing result.”
While the Storm are one of the competition’s elite teams, Doeuihi said that a shift in the team’s mentality could have helped them get the win in Round 1.
“People don’t know how we are going to turn up based on our past games,” Doeuihi said.
“As an organisation, we have to change players perspectives.
“We have to go on with those games and win them and make fans reassured that we can win those games.
“We’ve definitely taken a step forward.
“It’s something we are learning, and we are improving.”
Currently Jackson Hastings pairs Luke Brooks in the Tigers halves, but Doeuihi’s return will cause headaches for coach Michael Maguire.
It has been rumoured Hastings could move to lock, or the injured 23-year-old could slot into the centres on return, a position he has played in before under Maguire.
