The Chairman of the Western Suburbs Magpies Rugby League Football Club (WSMRLFC) has had his membership suspended.

Shannon Cavanagh fronted a three-person committee last night to learn his fate, this comes following a letter of complaint about Mr. Cavanagh being submitted to the Magpies by the Wests Tigers Chairman, Lee Hagipantelis.

The Wests Tigers Chairman alleged that Mr. Cavanagh had been ‘acting prejudicial to the interests of Wests Magpies’.

The committee, comprised of two Wests Ashfield appointed WSMRLFC board members and a member elected board member, voted two votes to one to suspend Mr. Cavanagh’s membership.

The member-elected board member voted against suspending Mr. Cavanagh’s membership.

Mr. Cavanagh has told Wests Tigers Podcast he is disappointed, but not surprised the Wests Ashfield aligned board members sided with Mr. Hagipantelis.

“Whilst I respect the process, I don’t agree with the decision.”

“I’m disappointed that it has come to this, but it won’t discourage me from continuing to push the decision-makers to be accountable and play by the rules. It’s the least that the members of the respective clubs deserve.”

Mr. Cavanagh has earned the ire of Mr. Hagipantelis and some other Wests Tigers board members after questioning a number of procedural decisions made by the Wests Tigers Board.

He says ASIC records show that Julie Romero replaced Mick Liubinskas on the 19th of April 2021 as the representative of Wests Magpies.

But, he alleges that Wests Magpies did not have a Board meeting on the 19th of April 2021, nor was this appointment discussed with the Board of Wests Magpies.

This matter has been referred to ASIC.

He has also questioned the appointment of Danny Stapleton as the representative of Balmain Tigers on the Wests Tigers Board.

Mr. Cavanagh claims that Balmain Tigers have not held an AGM to elect or re-elect its Directors since 2018 and says that with Directors’ terms lasting only two years, Balmain Tigers have no validly appointed Directors.

He asks, who then is making the decisions to appoint the Directors to the Board of Wests Tigers?

Mr. Cavanagh has also raised concerns that Mr. Hagipantelis’ appointment might also potentially be invalid given the circumstances surrounding the issues with the Balmain and Wests Magpies directors appointed to the board.

We will update you further on this story as any additional information comes to hand.

  1. What a joke the WT are with Pascoe and Hagipantelis being in charge of 10 years of failure, WA you should be ashamed.

  2. The questions raised by Mr Cavanagh are far more damning than the supposed criticism that the WT board were not competent. These questions go to the legality of what is happening at the very highest levels of the Club.
These questions need to be answered immediately.
Who now is the chairman of Western Suburbs Magpies RLFC? Will the Tigers board implant a stooge to do their bidding?

  3. Shannon loves the mighty Western Suburbs Magpies probably above everything other than his family.
Sadly he has exposed truths that the Wests Ashfield power brokers don’t like.
WSM were already in a dire place with the lack of recognition of the Magpie with the joint venture…..and then the Wests Ashfield B.O.D. took the unprecedented step of further downgrading the Magpie and loving the Tiger by removing all the large Magpies from the Wests Ashfield Leagues Club facade.
This was 5 plus years ago. Their intent to rob the loyal Magpie fans of their identity has simply escalated beyond control.
