Looking forward to the pod. Just heard a great point raised by Adel on that other pod, I only listen because of Adel’s comments. It was in response to Benji saying something in the presser about the win being attributed to the 30 players I think. Adel spoke of the players in the opposed sessions really having to buy in. And that’s something you notice, although early days, about this squad if you get the chance to watch the opposed sessions, they really buy in. They will be given roles of the opposition and the 17 players picked that week will call them out as the players they are to face if defending them in the session. And they will all get around each other when things go right. The opposing team, mainly Cup players, will also get around each other when they do something well, it’s competitive. And it was great to see a group of these guys in the sheds yesterday celebrating the win.

One of the greatest send offs from Nick tonight 🤣😂…I was a fan of JB when at the club, but listening from Eddie to some of his posts, I’ll reiterate what he said and call him a flog aswell‼️

Stains over Mason if Bula is injured for me. Never been impressed by Mason at Fullback too many limitations.

It’s Turuva at fullback for me, Staines on his wing.

It’s a hard one isn’t it if Bula doesn’t play… with Mason playing in the halves in reserve grade and Stains playing fullback. Hopefully Jaream is fit and ready to go. It’s a very winnable game against the phins. Don’t want to drop this game.

Staines yo wing is a huge step backwards. We need meters to start sets. If Bula is out it's Mason at the back. The only way I'd move Taruva to the back is if Laulilli has been showing he's ready for a wing spot

If Luke can cover the wing than I would move Turuva. I don't think Mason was bad during that first game, however it seems the strategy in a few games I have watched has shifted to short contested bombs if attacking teams are within 60m of the tryline....that would expose Mason as whilst our defence has improved we still allow them to get into attacking kick positions on almost every set and Mason is not confident under the high ball. Unless staines has trained at FB in the offseason I would not put him in there first game back in first grade.

Thanks for the pod again boys. Was great to listen to a post-win episode and sounded like you were having fun recording it. Eddie was in a rich vein of form tonight, especially the epic rant against our old friend John Bateman. Keep up the good work!

Controversial takes:

  • Seyfarth had almost identical stats to Twal on the weekend, but spent twice as long on the field. I’d prefer we start with jack bird in 2rf and bring in kit to replace the red on the bench.
  • Agree with Declan, let’s not kid ourselves, parra was woeful. Their outside back bar lomax were lame and made our guys look like the Harlem globetrotters. Knights weren’t much better. We better make the most of this soft draw to start the year, otherwise we might be in for some pain in a months time

have to disagree in respect to knights. Bradman best one of the best defensive and attacking centres in the game and Ponga. We were up against it as soon as we needed to rely on Faatape to defend that lot (I think he has a role but not against a lightning backline).

as for parra, in fairness, if we hold the ball early, add 20 on… the game was great for developing combinations and starting to gain some confidence . Just what the doctor ordered

I’m not so sure Steve. Staines is one of a few outside backs off contract who needs to take any opportunity he gets to prove he’s worthy of a good contract after this year. He’d pick up a contract somewhere I’m sure but, like the others, the better he plays the better the offers that come his way. For him it’s about doing his job well because the opportunities might not come all that often.

He gets absolutely owned bringing the ball back. We need to start our sets well. Staines does not provide this imo

I understand what you’re worried about & it’s fair. But guys like Naden (prior to injury) & Doueihi, both off contract & both criticised, are showing enough to make me think they understand how important it is for their future to perform. I think Staines could too if an opportunity was given to him. I could be wrong obviously but I think he deserves an opportunity if he’s putting in at training which I have no doubt he would be.

I know I’m alone on this so we’ll agree to disagree. Hopefully Jahream is fine anyway. If not we just get right behind who the staff think is the right man to replace him.

It would be a bit of a surprise if Benji did not put Mason at fullback, considering he was there for both trials and round 1...did not set the world on fire however did not do a bad job. I'm just concerned about his skill under the high ball.
