Hey guys

It's another HUGE edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast with a healthy debate, a quiz and another round of Eddie's Confidence Ratings (among other things!).

Another great ep guys!

Definitely think we are a better team if we have AD, Brooks and Hastings all finding a place and firing.

As Garry suggested, I would be playing Hasting as a traditional 7 (on the ball) and Brooks as a traditional 6 (running wide of the ruck). And pray to God they work as a combo because we need them too.

When AD returns, hopefully Hastings/Brooks are working. If so, I like Steve's suggestion of playing AD at 13.  Lock os now the 4th membe row the spine, so let's have a 4 best players in those positions. He's big enough, and it let's him touch the ball 2 or 3 times a set. And also let's him lead from the middle.

The Peach could fill in at 13 until then and the move to 14. Or if we need him to he can fill in at centre until TT and AJ come back, and play Seyfarth at lock.

We need to focus on the spine and develop from there. I don't see us working if AD isn't in a spine position. Also if AD plays in halves this year it means season is already over.

Yeah, that is very similar to how I see it. I worry about AD's defence if we put him in the 13 but would be willing to give him a go.

@garry I think he less a liability in the middle than on the edge at 6 or centre.

If he can't defend front on with support from his forwards, then he's not first grade material. Pair him with Twal and he'll be sweet.

There's tricks to ensure he's doing less tackling, by getting him at 2nd marker 2 or 3 times a set.

You also mentioned that Madden had dropped off from discussions.

I think they have from a fans perspective,  but I've been surprised about how often he's been mentioned by players interviews this preseason. It sounds like everyone loves him.

This time last year he was being discussed as a genuine starting option by the club, i haven't heard that this off season at all.

In my opinion lock should be one of your better defenders, not someone that needs to be given support or hidden in defence.

@garry is that because he's gone backwards or the arrival of Hastings?

I think it is a combination of things, I don't think he really took his really small chances in the top grade last year but he has also not played much football for the last 2 years. I think he is one that has really had his development impacted by the covid stoppages. He has aspects to his game that I like but still has a lot of work to do.

The one thing that blows me away with the ad to centre or lock argument is that he is actually a poor defender and those are both positions you can't afford to carry

@garry all the chat last season was to play him in rd 1 when AD was out suspended. Then he had to wait until mid season to get a start.
We’ll all have more of an idea after the trials, but even then trial form doesn’t mean a lot.

I could be happy with

3 Peachey

6 Brooks

7 Madden

13 Hastings

come round 1

From memory there was a bit more chat than just about round 1, there was chat about him being the standout player of the preseason, maybe it was all to build his confidence for round 1.Its interesting that there is no discussion of him at all this preseason despite I believe him winning the Magpies player of the year.

I think in his most recent interview, Madge mentioned him along with Brooks, Hastings and Peachey as working together developing halves combinations. Not 100% sure though

AD should have been a great fullback, just lacks the pace.

Great pod guys. Completely agree with Declan re: AD at 6. He's our best half and should play there - he's too good to put in the centres. I agree that at this stage of his career he doesn't necessarily make the players around him better, but nor does Brooks - and AD is a far better player imo.
