As the Wests Tigers' hunt for a new NRLWhead coach continues to ramp up, a multi-time league winner from England has formally applied for the vacant head coaching job.

According to sources speaking on the condition of anonymity, Zero Tackle can reveal that Derek Hardman, the head coach of the St Helens RLFC Super Leaguewomen's team, has formally applied for the vacant 2026 Wests Tigers NRLW head coaching job.

An assistant coach of England's national team, Hardman is a multi-league winner with St Helens and won the historic treble - League, Challenge Cup and League Leaders Shield - in 2021.

Is this just ticking boxes so the appointment looks to be done "by the book"?

I've read elsewhere that Adel did not get the job... but this article states the position is vacant, were they just killing time after agreeing with Hardman to terms, while he made his application formal?

@barra

There's still an opportunity for coach Adel to apply, closing date: 18th September.

I just listened to the Claws Out podcast from last Sunday, Adel stated that the club told him not to apply because they didn't consider him qualified...

Sadly this is true.

@garry Sadly? Why?

Because I believe that Adel would have been an excellent coach for the NRLW side. I don't really understand telling someone not to apply for an advertised position.

Im assuming that the fact that they said he didn t qualify, means they specifically said Level 2 or Level3 certificate?

I assume there were position criteria published for the job that included levels of certification? If this Adel guy didn't meet those levels then he should not waste his, and the selection panel's, time by applying.

As a former employer through criteria based-selection, if one of my staff indicated to me that they were thinking of applying for a position for which they weren't qualified, I'd politely tell them not to bother. I don't see the problem.

Then you cull at the when you recieve the applications.

There is a little more to it than that, it's not my story to tell so I'll leave it here.

Was listening to a podcast a week ago and they were talking about the next tigers nrlw coach. They said we should inquire about Kate Mullaly from parra. Well known and respected by players. We will need to rebuild and she maybe the best person to do that. Going to be interesting to see who we sign.

Looks like it will be Garth Brennan (former Titans NRL coach).
