Why the Tigers are spoon contenders in 22

The Tigers come into this season with some fresh faces, but more questions than answers even over their quality.

Jackson Hastings and Oliver Gildart arrive from the English Super League and will need to find their way to NRL standard in a hurry, while utility Tyrone Peachey has hardly had a stable season since the beginning of his career and may not find it at the Tigers.

The recruits, at any rate, don't scream "transformational" like they do at the Broncos and Bulldogs for example. Instead, they scream that mediocrity may be able to find some improvement if everything goes perfectly.

But the club's persistence in sticking with Luke Brooks is somewhat baffling given he is now the most capped NRL player without a finals appearance, while Adam Doueihi's injury at the start of the season could leave them staring down the barrel early doors.

Michael Maguire's future is anything but secure which will only heap extra pressure on the club, particularly now with Tim Sheens watching over his shoulder.

There are bright spots - Daine Laurie and Jake Simpkin for example, as well as the brutal young forward Stefano Utoikamanu- but whether that is enough to avoid the spoon seems debatable.

We have to be picked for the spoon. Our edges (centres and backrow) are basically untested or average at best. Our halves have not proven themselves to be quality NRL players. Our middle forwards are inconsistent.

In stating that we have a bunch of options in the centres, Luc can be one of the most damaging edge forwards in the comp and Hastings may be really good.

Opinions are like a**holes…. Everybody has one! 🤣

However, a lot of what was written is not far off the truth and as a great man once said… if you’re not first, you’re last! 🤣

Zerotackle/Sporting News (I think they are the same) would have to be the worst of the media. Their stories are either rewording FoxSports articles 2 days after the story breaks or rehashing the Brooks/ Madge/ Tigers BS.

I don’t think we’ll get the spoon but bottom 4 is probably realistic.

We have a bottom four roster.

It's always possible that we will over perform but on the balance of evidence it's not likely.

Where we finish in the bottom four is anyone's guess but a spoon wouldn't be a complete surprise.

If we play with commitment and cohesion, like a champion team,as opposed to a team of champions we are right in the mix;just as we did against Souths last year.

Im not willing to write us of before a tackle has been made or a try scored. The competition around mid level of the table will be pretty fierce. One or two wins, and a superior for and against can really elevate or lower fortunes.

Optimism before cynicism, especially with significant structural changes at our club.Year of the Tiger!

Superbowl on Monday our time, my team the Cincinnati Bengals trying to win their first Superbowl. Some positive comparison for the Wests Tigers, the Bengals only won 6 games in total in the previous 2 seasons including going 2-14 2 years ago.

The Bengals are almost as important to me as the Wests Tigers, the Superbowl this weekend is as big for me as the 2005 Grand Final, something I thought I would never see and has really occurred under similar circumstances.
