I get the concern over the jobs-for-the-boys aspect, but why the hate for Hodgson? He has a pretty good resume in terms of experience, both in head and assistant roles in multiple codes and countries.

Not sure who else we'd be able to sign up with a better CV.

I agree. Let’s give him a chance and see how we go. Thing is, any other option would be someone who has either failed as a head coach, is raw, or is seen in the game as not being head coach material.

If they experienced there will be constant discussion about why he doesn’t have the top job if we start poorly. If things go terribly and the coaches have to change Richo can wipe this slate clean and bring in his own team.

@avocadoontoast The ironic part of this Marshall has given himself no chance of real success by signing an average assistant.. winning coaches surround themselves with proven experienced assistants Marshall’s hesitation to sign someone with real credentials has sealed his fate  go figure.

So what we need is a really experienced assistant coach (preferably a former NRL coach)

Who?

I think you're overestimating the attractiveness of the gig - basically a second assistant at the 3x wooden spooners.

If you look at the assistants moving this offseason, they're basically all failed head coaches, or younger inexperienced guys.

There is a reason why hodgo hasn't got a gig with any other NRL team. I would take take Jason Demetriou or Brad Arthur over Hodgo anyday. Hell, i'd even take Neil Henry.

Not sure we are in a position where we can wait and sacrifice another season. Our coaching staff and forward pack means next year is a write off already imo.

I don't think either of those guys are remotely realistic.

Again, it's a secondary assistant role at a struggling club. The list of takers isn't going to be very long or well credentialed.

so you feel the appointment of Hodgo was because he was the absolute best candidate in the world and had nothing to do with his relationship with Benji?

Brett Hodgson is a fighter that should never have been the success he was on the field.

He will bring a strong and hard working mentality to our young squad.

I don't hate Hodgson, he's one of our greatest ever players. But his resume as a coach isn't good at all. He's never lasted more than 2 years in a role, he's never got an opportunity in Australia (except with us in 2018) and his head coaching record is under 40% overseas.

But we arent employing a head coach, we are employing an assistant coach. Someone to assist the head coach to implement their plans and systems. Hodgon has at least experience a range of other systems.

Benji has shown he is nowhere near ready to be head coach, but we're stuck with him. So what we need is a really experienced assistant coach (preferably a former NRL coach) that can do the majority of the work getting the team ready. Someone who can stand up to Benji and tell him that he's making a mistake or someone that can drive standards Benji clearly isn't.

having an assitant coach "standing up to" the head coach is a recipe for disaster and would end in tears no matter who it is. What you have outlined above is not a decription of an assistant coach, you are describing a replacement coach. Now I dont necessarily disagree with you about that, but IMO thats not what you want from an assistant.

All the other competitive teams have assistant coaches with more experience than our head coach.

But none of them have an assistant that is "standing up to" the head coach.

I dislike the idea of the 2005 Boys Club! I don’t know if Benji doesn't want to be challenged in his coaching role or what. I would like to know who else was interviewed for the position.

Welcome back Brett!

IMO he’s one hell of an upgrade on Robbie whom he has replaced.

@tiger5150 my view is that a strong coach appoints strong assistants, and an inexperienced coach at a struggling club should hire even stronger assistants. A key part of success in any endeavour (business or sport) means surrounding yourself with the best tools to achieve success. If you look at the top clubs, they all have strong assistants, and those assistants are far more qualified to be head coaches than Benji is. so when you're in a position like we are, when we have three wooden spoons in a row and a head coach with very little experience, you need to make a decision. You either need to a) get rid of him, and replace him with someone who is a true head coach or b) surround him with people of that quality that can improve the standards of the club and get the team moving in a direction that he is unable to do.

Unfortunately, we have taken option c) hiring a friend of the unexperienced head coach who has had a pretty underwhelming coaching career himself. There is nothing Benji can learn about coaching from Hodgo, and there is nothing that Hodgo can learn about coaching from Benji. Deep down, we all know how this is going to end, and it's not good.

No - I've already said that it's valid to criticise the jobs for the boys aspect of it.

My point is I think your expectations are out of sync for who we are likely to attract. If you look at the assistants of the top teams, there's not exactly a bunch of names that leap off the page. Even the triple premiers have one of our old assistants (Gardiner) and an ex player (Peter Wallace). Bellamy has one of his sons on his staff!

The NRL Assistant circuit is a bit of a merry go round of ex players learning their trades, journeymen assistants and failed senior FG coaches.

I have no real opinion on Hodgson as a coach, but his diversity of experiences is a plus at least.
