Michael Maguire’s future at the Wests Tigers will be on the line over the next fortnight with the club set to undertake a mid-season review.

Wests Tigers director of football Tim Sheens confirmed the club would be taking a look at the first half of the season and will make a recommendation to the board about how he wants the football department to look at the upcoming board meeting.

“We haven’t had a score put on us until last night,” Sheens told the Herald following the Tigers’ 44-18 loss to the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

“The score last night hurt us after leading at half-time. I know the boys are disappointed. Madge is disappointed. I’m not prepared to make a comment 24 hours later about what we’re going to do or not do.

“There’s always ongoing speculation. I won’t make specific comments on the coach. It is a moment for us to stop and catch our breath and then put forward a recommendation after that. There’s a board meeting next month.

“The questions will come with that about where we are going and what we are doing moving forward. There’ll have to be some recommendations. The bye gives us a chance to stop and reassess without the emotion of it all. This isn’t all aimed at one person, it’s about the club generally.”

As reported by the Herald last week, the Tigers had hoped to be on double-digit competition points by the halfway mark of the season.

Last night’s second half capitulation against the Rabbitohs leave the Tigers with just three wins from the first 12 games of the season heading into the bye next week. The Tigers won five of their first 13 games last year.

While there are many at the club happy with the improvement in some areas of the team, the fact remains the Tigers have once again gone backwards despite having several key players out through injury and suspension for the majority of the season. The Tigers won five of their first 13 games last year,

“It is the half way mark and we will be having a look at things,” Sheens said.

“With no game on there is plenty of time and less pressure to look at everything including our recruitment, our kids - who are being chased by a million clubs - and what we do with guys like Adam Doueihi and Jackson Hastings.”

“It’s not the defining moment but it’s a chance for us a catch our breath and have a look at things. There’s no doubt with Madge being under the pump lasty year, those sorts of things have been discussed. There’s no major decisions being made at this stage.”

Sheens confirmed the club will begin negotiations with the likes of Daine Laurie, Adam Doueihi and Jackson Hastings about extensions in the coming weeks.

“It’s only just this week past started to ring agents to see where we stand with them and how much they want,” Sheens said.

“We’re gauging the market and what it’s going to cost us.”

Wests Tigers review to decide Michael Maguire’s future before NRL Round 13

Tim Sheens has revealed Wests Tigers will determine the future of under-siege coach Michael Maguire before the club’s next game.

Tim Sheens is to undertake an immediate review of the Wests Tigers football operations that will determine the future of under-siege coach Michael Maguire before the club’s next game.

As boardroom pressure increased over the weekend after a thumping loss to South Sydney, no-one at the Wests Tigers would guarantee Maguire’s job is safe with the team languishing in 15th place on the ladder after just three wins from 12 matches.

Chairman Lee Hagipantelis, normally talkative, directed all media inquiries to Sheens, who will make the recommendation to the board on Maguire’s position before the club’s next game against Manly on June 12.

“You could say it’s going to be an internal good look at ourselves,” Sheens said.

“We have the break with the bye and it’s a time for us to stop and reflect on our position. Obviously the coaching will be part of that. I’ll be talking to the coach.

“The recommendations will come from there. I’m not saying either way.

“The coaching is one aspect of the review.”

I pressed Sheens again on Maguire and the club’s performances since he’s been there. Ninth, 11th, 13th and now 15th.

“I’m not going to say yay or nay until we have a better look at what’s going on,” Sheens responded.

“They’ve been discussing Madge even as far back as last year when I was still in England.

“I’m not going to go there. You all brought it up again after round two.

“You’ve been around long enough to know there have been discussions and it will obviously come up and our next board meeting.

“There are elements in the club that are happy to be patient with Madge. Others aren’t.

“That’s the case at a lot of clubs when things are going so well.”

The Wests Tigers led Souths 18-12 at halftime but for the third time this season they failed to score a point in the second-half.

Not one forward made 100 metres.

Outside of James Tamou (93 metres) not one other forward made more than 75 metres.

They were absolutely trampled by the Rabbitohs’ middle forwards.

The Wests Tigers had a disgraceful 53 missed tackles, 34 of them in the second-half. Dane Laurie and Luke Garner six each, Joe Ofahengaue five.

“This is going to be a complete overview of where we’re at,” Sheens said, “We need to have a really good look at ourselves.

“We’ll be looking at recruitment, injury updates and everything else. It’s also our investment in juniors to beat off the bigger clubs that want to cherry pick our kids.

Sheens insists the club has yet to look at other coaching options despite a rumour over the weekend that former Origin and Test halfback Brett Kimmorley would step in as a caretaker.

“We haven’t even gone there,” Sheens said.

“I’ll be making a recommendation to the board but it’s their decision.

“I don’t want to be the focus just to be the coach.

“I’ve been here six months and I’ve got more of a grip about what’s going on.

“We have to look at everything and then make some decisions.”

Sheens saying there is no major discussions being made at this time ...Ok does anyone believe that with the economy tanking and Corporate support to start diminishing rapidly it’s well and truely time that the mediocrity tag this club has is rebranded to a POSITIVE outlook and the start is replacing this coach !

Telegraph headline says Madge might have coached Wests Tigers for last time.

I wonder if anyone is feeding them inside info? Ie at board level.

There was an end of season review where Madge narrowly retained his position. We are 3:11 and they have just announced another review. It would be untenable to do that and reach the conclusion that the club was where the Board wanted it to be. Extremely unlikely in my view Madge survives this.

So we conduct an end of year review and back the coach absolutely. Then, not 6 months later, in a season where there has been a massive improvement with effort and resilience but where injuries have decimated us, the club now decides they're not sure about the coach.

Really?

I don’t believe Madge is the problem. I think we are close to a very good playing roster. I don’t believe Pascoe is  the problem. All of the above must take some level of responsibility but the heart of our ongoing problems is our board. They offer no direction. They are reactionary. They are invisible. I don’t know how, but if we pine for change, the change needs to start there.

They backed the coach 5 months ago. Stay solid and support him and the football department as they continue to grow our squad.

This side doesn't have 8 wins in it ...especially after you look at the draw

Fixed it for you unhappy. Don't worry about 8 straight

We’re 3 from 12. Effort means nothing if we’re not getting results. Yesterday we had our strongest team of the year and we conceded 44 points. His use of the interchange was unforgivable.

The fact they stuffed up last year retaining him doesn’t mean they should see it through. They made a mistake, they need to try and fix it. If they hang onto Madge, next year will be a disaster too..

He’s delusional. 3.5 years and we have gone backwards. No improvement whatsoever. He needs to be moved on immediately. The WT board wasted 2022 by keeping him in the coaches role, can’t afford to waste 2023 too.

Disagree Avo. Madge is right this season still has 12 rounds to go for us.

In the next few weeks the good teams will start to build up and go thru the gears building for the semis.

This time of year most of the teams are not trying to peak. This is why up to now being competive but not winning is not great

This will just go around in circles so agree to disagree mate. I just think judging us on a year where we have had up to 9 first graders out is unfair and yesterday was ok (considering first time spine together) until we were trampled on due to momentum south’s were given.

Anyway, I see and get your point of view but I think Madge is worth persevering with.

Maybe it’s as simple as they didn’t have a coach lined up at the end of last year but they do now. Throw in that the bulldogs are in the market for a coach and maybe Sheens has decided he has to move now or lose his first choice

We were getting trampled through the middle the entire match.
