Wests Tigers football boss Tim Sheens fumes at claims of $7 million Cameron Munster offer

Wests Tigers have distanced themselves from reports that they are about to make a huge bid for Storm superstar Cameron Munster.

A foxsports.com.au story on Thursday morning reported that the Tigers are set to launch an audacious $7 million bid for the in-demand five-eighth.

But it immediately drew an angry response from Tigers boss Tim Sheens.

"It's ridiculous," Sheens told Wide World of Sports.

"We haven't spoken to Munster or his manager and don't intend to.

"My focus is on development, getting our current spine back on the field and fit and working from there.

"Injuries have killed us this season but we have bought a couple of good players for next year in Isaiah Papali'i (Parramatta) and Api Koroisau (Penrith).

"We haven't had our best team on the field all season but people don't seem to realise that.

"Adam Doueihi missed the first half of the season and his knee is still coming good.

"Then we lost Jackson Hastings with a broken leg and Luke Brooks on top of that so we have struggled for consistency in the playmakers.

"We were very poor against the Roosters last week but we lost two players in the first 15 minutes and another one later in the game.

"We had blokes out of position and out on their feet.

"Once we get our best team on the field next season and some of our good young players start coming through, things will turn around."

I don’t know about anyone else but I find these comments from Sheen’s very concerning and kind of delusional.

Doesn’t bode well for the future. Unless there is a Benji, Robbie or Tedesco coming through we are going to continue to flounder with Sheens attitude.

We have the worst roster in rugby league. There needs to be a complete cleanout.

I’m expecting a turnover/clean out at the end of this season, but we have to attract a few more experienced leaders into the side.

I am regularly questioning my sanity on this forum as I feel I represent the minority, but I don’t see anything wrong with sheens’ statement. In fact I think it’s great that he has returned fire to shoddy reporting. Someone from fox sports (I assume hooper) has made some outlandish statement linking tigers with the best player in the comp, then they follow it up as fact and news. We all want someone like Munster at the club but the report is rubbish, so sheens is calling them out. We have been asking for someone to stand up to the media for years, and when we finally do have someone, we hang crap on him. Everything else in the article that he states(eg injuries, etc) is true.

I feel like we have been down as a supporter base for so long, and hammered with an endless stream of crap fox articles, we have become naturally pessimistic and critical about everything. It’s hard after a 70 point flogging to excited for the future, but it’s tiring to read and hear all the negativity within the club. I probably just need to get off the internet and rejoin in the off season once things calm down.

I think people are justified in being frustrated at the way the club is/has been managed. I agree that Sheens needs support at this stage, though the shine will come off if we aren’t seen to be making forward strides.

I'm totally with you skippa 13 on this one although I've been questioning my sanity for a long time fullstop. I'm glad Sheens is being positive. That's what I want from our Coach. I would have been far more concerned if he admitted we're ratshit publicly and threw his hands up in the air. It's clear as the article suggests that he's angry with not only the Media beat ups but also with all this doomsday negativity. He realises better than all of us what a massive job he has but I believe he knows what the Club needs to do to at least improve. And I believe that he and his Coaching Staff will do everything within their power to turn things around. Yes - he has made mistakes but there have also been some good decisions lately eg Naden extension. It disappoints me when the focus is so clearly on the negatives. So when he states " Things will turn around" I choose to get behind him and believe him. He knows a thousand times better than me. At least I have a bit of hope and without hope I should give up on footie completely and fulfil my destiny to become the World's Best Lawn Bowler. Thank you skippa 13 for your positivity. I'm with you. Go Tigers!!!

@robbierat1 if your lawn bowling game is anything like mine, the middy you drink at each end probably doesn’t help performance. Glad I’ve got an insane partner to spread our delusional hope across the forum.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,Wests Tigers need a strong media unit or entity to call the BS and to disseminate information and objectives whatever they may be.Respect for the fan base that ultimately pays the bills and buys the merchandise has seemed to take a back seat.

Good on Sheens for going public on our current state of affairs and applying some level of context to it,but I do believe if the club had in some official capacity released statements in regards to the reasoning and overall benefits surrounding player sub-letting it might have lessened the groundswell of discontent especially in light of recent on-field embarrassment.

For mine I don’t believe we play the information wars with much flair and seem to be in a constant state of damage control.

It’s just Sheens being Sheens… Shifty or Sheenius, he’ll say whatever he thinks needs to be said. Best not to have a knee jerk reaction - at least that’s my survival method!

Far better off trying to read between the lines in his play book.

I do not understand the constant negatively in regards to offering one of the games best players a contract offer no matter what the amount was …the point is the Tigers need to break the cycle of recruitment ,the club has one of the best COE’s have many spots open on the roster have the money to compete with most clubs .The coaching cycle is set for 5 seasons that in itself is a major positive , player managers are now aware the Tigers are at there door with serious money…serious training facilities …serious coaching potential and stability .Offering players like Munster overs is the way to break the cycle better that than offering huge overs for has beens, one or two will bite that’s human nature !

The simple fact is that it was never happening and it never will. This is just a classic case of WTs being used as leverage to ratchet up and massage Munster’s asking price. There’s a very good reason Melbourne Storm are refusing to pay that sort of money.Salary cap suicide, even if you have the best coach and arguably best recruiter in the game.

At the same time it’s an opportunity for James hooper to weave the tigers into another article to get a few more clicks.

I agree Snake. My cynicism is based on the premise that no amount of money could attract a star recruit to our club at the moment.

Munster is the one player that I would pay overs for, and I’m usually tight. Won’t happen obviously but this is a good move by the club to throw an offer out there and disrupt the market.
