You’ve got to hand it to the Wests Tigers for trying to think outside the square. In line to get the club’s first-ever wooden spoon, the Wests Tigers have hatched a plan to make an audacious play aimed at signing the NRL’s best player – Cameron Munster.

Yes, you read that correctly, the Tigers are going to try and throw their hat in the ring with the Queensland and Australian five-eighth.

The way we’ve heard it the Tigers are talking about making Munster a five-year, $7 million offer aimed at blowing the Melbourne Storm and the Dolphins out of the water.

Fresh off the back of being flogged by 70 by the Sydney Roosters, it’s clear the ailing club needs a circuit breaker signature.

Sure Api Korisau and possibly Isaiah Papali’i will arrive next year but the Tigers are going to need to get a hell of a lot busier in the open market to fix the current plight of the club.

Munster, 27, is precisely the type of key signing who could help stop the rot at Concord.

You can’t blame them for dreaming – remember the Tigers also sounded out Sydney Roosters captain James Tedesco recently – but the chances of it happening are in all likelihood Buckley’s and very little.

The Tigers virtually have an open cheque book to spend for 2024 with a host of top 30 players including Adam Doueihi, Luke Brooks, Jackson Hastings, Daine Laurie, Shawn Blore, Joe Ofahengaue, Alex Seyfarth and Tuki Simpkins all off contract.

Tigers incoming coach Tim Sheens has arguably the greatest challenge of his decorated rugby league career in trying to fix the bun fight that is Concord.

At least the club’s succession plan of Benji Marshall taking over as head coach in 2025 is guaranteed to give the Wests Tigers some pulling power in terms of current players who are off contract.

The last five-year deal the Tigers floated was to incoming Canterbury-Bankstown head coach Cameron Ciraldo.

The risk with this Munster play is it will end with a similar result. Thanks, but no thanks.

Unless it’s $7m per year we’re no chance.

$1.4m a season.

Keep in mind the cap is going up. NRL is preparing to lift the salary cap to $10.5 million in 2023, and raise it incrementally each year during the next broadcast cycle ($100,000 for each subsequent year).

If true this is good business. We either jab an absolute superstar and hungry competitor, or force others to pay more.

Correct, no harm in throwing out a net...as you say it only puts more pressure on the other clubs.

I agree with everyone here that we are a snowflakes chance in hell of signing Cam Munster.....but if there ever was a superstar likely to sign with us, I reckon Munster is just the right kind of,,,,how do I say this.......neurodiverse kind of bloke to do it.

Fantasy stuff this not based in reality I'm pretty sure but, tin hat on here, I would be reluctant to throw that kind on money at Cameron Munster given his off field issues in the recent past.

Works ok at a winning machine like Melbourne with the kind of culture which keeps him in check but coming across to where the Tigers are now for that kind on money would be a huge risk considering it would hamper our efforts to strengthen the forward pack.

Wests Tigers football boss Tim Sheens fumes at claims of $7 million Cameron Munster offer

Wests Tigers have distanced themselves from reports that they are about to make a huge bid for Storm superstar Cameron Munster.

A foxsports.com.au story on Thursday morning reported that the Tigers are set to launch an audacious $7 million bid for the in-demand five-eighth.

But it immediately drew an angry response from Tigers boss Tim Sheens.

"It's ridiculous," Sheens told Wide World of Sports.

"We haven't spoken to Munster or his manager and don't intend to.

"My focus is on development, getting our current spine back on the field and fit and working from there.

"Injuries have killed us this season but we have bought a couple of good players for next year in Isaiah Papali'i (Parramatta) and Api Koroisau (Penrith).

"We haven't had our best team on the field all season but people don't seem to realise that.

"Adam Doueihi missed the first half of the season and his knee is still coming good.

"Then we lost Jackson Hastings with a broken leg and Luke Brooks on top of that so we have struggled for consistency in the playmakers.

"We were very poor against the Roosters last week but we lost two players in the first 15 minutes and another one later in the game.

"We had blokes out of position and out on their feet.

"Once we get our best team on the field next season and some of our good young players start coming through, things will turn around."

I don’t know about anyone else but I find these comments from Sheen’s very concerning and kind of delusional.
