I’m 90% sure transfer payments are not included in the cap.
Being a different comp and if there is goodwill from all parties then it seems odd if the NRL contract wasn’t voided.
Similar situation if say the Sharks came and wanted Sullivan and were willing to pay his full contract then there would be no penalty to us.
It’s why I find it a little baffling that clubs can’t negotiate a player pay out without it going into the salary cap. Like, if Sullivan decided he wanted to quit being a player and was happy to take a negotiated settlement then that should be the end of it.
I understand some clubs may try and rort this ie sign a guy that has two years left, give him a four year deal and that includes a two year golden handshake, but if policed and approved by the NRL I really don’t see an issue.

Transfer fees are different to player payment, a transfer fee is an extra fee paid to a club to release a player.
We will still be paying part of Bud's salary so I believe this will still be included in the cap.

That’s right. But why should we paying a player that has negotiated a new deal at another rugby league club (not withstanding a negotiation that includes us paying a percentage of his wage).

Because we signed him to a terrible contract and he is owed that money. Seems we made it clear that we are willing to pay him some of his salary if another club picks him up.

I understand that, but my point is the finding of a new contract elsewhere can only be done by ceasing the current contract.

This is a no brainer for all involved. Particularly since the $900k doesn’t come off our cap
The $900K would be included on our cap 100%.

How come it wouldn't be on our books? Is it $900k to dissolve the contract? I thought we were willing to chip in $300 over the 3 years
payments to super league clubs don’t come off NRL salary cap
Its not a payment to a Super League Club, its payment of Sullivans Contract. It is not a transfer fee.
I’m 90% sure transfer payments are not included in the cap.

Sullivan still needs to get paid his Contract money, the portion of his Contract paid by us goes on the Cap.
Similar situation if say the Sharks came and wanted Sullivan and were willing to pay his full contract then there would be no penalty to us.
Exactly the same situation. If Hull (or Sharks) come and pay Sullivan his entire Contract, none goes on our Cap, but if they dont, then the portion we pay goes on our cap. Somebody pays the penalty for the shortfall and I doubt it would be ( and it shouldnt be) Sullivan.

Because it would make the cap null and void. Imagine if we were offering Luai $1.2M for 4 years ($4.8M) but Parra offered him$1M for 6 years ($6M) with the understanding they would move him on in 4?

Why would Sullivan agree to end his Contract and go elsewhere if it costs him $$$$$$$? Why should he?
Reports that Sullivan could be set for a move to the Super League 🤞
I think all these movements (Bud, Bateman, eventually AD) will happen it's all in the hands of the managers to negotiate who pays what. Everyone wants to play hard ball ie new clubs want the contracts subsidized by the existing clubs, existing clubs don't want to concede a dollar more than they have to and it can create sticking points which seems to be happening right now with Gutherson to Dragons.
But eventually something has to give, someone blinks first, and the managers actually have to earn their commissions for once!
The interview that ended Terrell May’s Sydney Roosters career
This is the interview that terminated Terrell May’s tenure at the Sydney Roosters as the club begins enforcing a cultural shift in Bondi.

I don’t wanna play.
They were the four words that ended Terrell May’s time at the Sydney Roosters.
Despite playing all 27 games this season, the Roosters last week told a shocked May he was free to leave the club immediately, despite signing a $950,000 contract extension in April.
While the Roosters won’t comment publicly, this masthead has been told that May’s carefree attitude towards rugby league – and the club – was the catalyst for his shock exit.
Roosters hierarchy demand their players are fully invested and some felt May wasn’t totally committed to the club and the game.
May also wielded some influence over a number of young players at the club – another concern for Roosters officials.
The club has no ill-feelings towards May.
Concern for May’s future at the Roosters started in September when he conducted a media interview during the finals campaign.

He said: “Sometimes I just get ‘I don’t wanna be there and don’t wanna play’.
“I gave it away twice, when I was 18 and then when I was 20. Both times I just didn’t want to play anymore. I get like that throughout the year as well.
“It’s a weird feeling. I don’t think many people experience it where one week they love the game and go on the TV screens and the next week they don’t want to be there at all.”
The comments set off alarm bells at Bondi Junction.
One of the Roosters’ best players in 2024, May is well-liked at the club.
“I was devastated for him,” Roosters teammate Angus Crichton said last week.

“He is literally straight as an arrow. He doesn’t drink, he is a really good guy and he hasn’t done anything off the field to warrant this.”
May was subjected to hurtful and incorrect accusations about why he was told to leave the club.
He also said in the interview: “Sometimes I just feel I could quit, like in a day. It sounds a bit weird, but I get those thoughts sometimes where I’m just like, ‘Is this really for me? I’m very grateful to be where I am and play with the Roosters, but rugby league isn’t the whole of me.
“Then you just look at the bigger picture. You need to support your family and I couldn’t do it without footy. I have aspirations to take the club to the grand final and play for NSW.”
May represented Samoa in their two-Test series against England in England.
Thoughts?

@garry Thoughts? I think this is a little concerning when so much of the problems with key players this year was attitude and application.
This is where Luai is going to be key. He will know if May is switched on, controllable, worth the investment/risk. In the podcast it was said that hopefully Luai was in his ear (while in England with Samoa) about coming over to the Tigers. His assessment will be crucial.
The obvious thought is that this is not a person with a crocodile roll attitude! That doesn't fit Richo's narrative.
But he is the quality of player we need to sign. I guess it all depends on where Luai feels May is at and how he fits Benji's philosophy (he has already said similar comments about the game not being all of him).
It is concerning what May has said in the interview but the 2 times he quit he was very young & still maturing & learning what it takes to be successful. I am not as huge a fan of him as some but at 25 he has his best in front of him. I wouldn’t be breaking the bank to sign him but if we’re keen, and I hope we are as we need another middle, then I’d hope whatever interviews take place they address these quotes & his desire to become a better player etc. We need to be sure he’s 100 percent up for the fight because if there is even a tiny doubt then we can’t do it.
