NRL legend Benji Marshall has revealed Michael Maguire believes he will remain as Tigers head coach despite suggestions he was facing the axe.

While the Tigers cult-hero did admit he was unsure of Maguire’s job security, he conceded that he has spoken to Maguire who remains in high spirits.

Pressure has heaped on the merger club’s coach in recent days amid reports the club will conduct an immediate review of operations and will make a recommendation on Maguire’s future before the Tigers’ next game — Sunday June 12.

“I’ve made contact with Madge in the past few days and he’s really confident that he’s probably going to be around,” Marshall said on NRL360.

“His faith in the player’s hasn’t wavered, I don’t know if you watch the press conference, he still thinks the Tigers can win the competition but results at the moment is what drives coaches and their jobs.

“The reality is we’re three from twelve this season which isn’t great.”

Maguire coached Marshall during his latter stages of his tenure at the Tigers and at international level for New Zealand.

“I can only speak from my experience, I really enjoyed Madge’s coaching,” Marshall noted.

“I felt like he gave me a lot of things that I was lacking at the time, made me probably play a little bit longer so from that perspective I like him but I’m not the one making the decision.”

As it stands the Tigers sit 15th on the competition ladder and on Sunday football director Tim Sheens said the club needed to take a “good look at ourselves.”

“We have the break with the bye and it’s a time for us to stop and reflect on our position,” Sheens said.

“Obviously the coaching will be part of that. I’ll be talking to the coach.

“The coaching is one aspect of the review.

“I’m not going to say yay or nay until we have a better look at what’s going on.“

Sure is, they never learn. Now this is going to play out increasingly in the media and we’ll look incompetent no matter which way we go.

I believe for all the negatives and the depleted roster,I can objectively say there has been considerable improvement in our play. For mine there is still a lot to look forward to as this season progresses, finals or no finals. All you pundits out there ask yourself realistically where you believed we’d finish this year? That includes the podcast panel. My recollections are that most weren’t too excited about our prospects.

I still maintain that it would be absolute folly to dispense with Madge now,and I believe it’s only this year that you can say  that this is Madge’s team.Cleary’s salary cap handiwork completely screwed us,and then he scuttled off.We were paying 3 or 4 players marquis money who barely raised a whimper. We’re still paying for Moses Mbye! You just cannot do that to your cap without ongoing negative repercussions and they were a major contributor to our fortunes.

With the sacking of the coach, comes the the new coach with all his new personnel.Do we want to lose our assistant coaches as well? There is also the loyalty to Madge factor amongst our players and how that impacts upon them and their future allegiances to Wests Tigers.I believe that is potentially the biggest destabilising threat going forward.I think we’ve come too far down this path to suddenly about face.

I agree with what Tiger Steve stated, being to allow Madge to fulfill his contract. After that see where we are and do as you will.

.

I want to keep Madge but if he were to get the flick then Ciraldo would be my first choice. BUT come on guys, this feels like the typical NRL tabloid media schtick. The rumours start, usually as a suggestion. Then build and build from 360 to forums to Channel 9 to Sporting News and back around again.

All baseless crap building off of each other and then just when everyone is convinced....Ciraldo says he was never interested and it is all "The tigers missed another one, what a mess!"

End of the year Madge is sacked and we get Paul Green

Baseless other than Sheens saying that they were initiating a review

I bet there are a lot of clubs taking this time to review. It is a part of any corporate entity/workplace to review how it does things. Anything could be happening from changing the training schedule to firing the coach, but as soon as the tigers are mentioned as having a review...

No matter where you stand on Madge, I think everyone could agree that this has been handled very badly from the club/board.

If they want to sack him,  you just do it and have a replacement lined up in one swift movement.

Sheens shouldn't need a 2 week reveiw to know if he wants to keep or sack madge.

If you are going to keep him, give just weekend his position by running a 2 week reveiw. And made our club look like absolute amateurs in the process (for the 2nd time in 6 months)

@frullens 100%. You would think after the embarrassing circus of a review we saw after last season they would have learned their lesson, yet here we are again. No other club does things like this. Look at the Dogs - game on Friday,  Barrett gone Sunday. The discussions had happened in house, privately and then the decision was made and it was done. We on the other hand drag everything through the media and do things at a snails pace. Absolute bunch of clowns, the lot of them.

@tiger5150 If that's the case why bother with announcing the two week review? It's as if we're addicted to the pageantry.

The problem is the club thinks they're smarter than everyone else, but really they're dumber. Much, much dumber.
