Ian Watson

OK so listen to this.

He was coach at Salford when Sheens was GM of Salford

He also coached Hastings when he took Salford from bottom of the ladder to the Grand Final.

So is the only available coach who has a strong relationship with the 2 most important people in the club - in the GM and the Halfback/captain.

His coaching record is also very strong  particularly in taking weak clubs to the top.

Has said he wants to coach in NRL

Salford - 2015-2020

Salford are normally the perennial bottom team, definately one of the weakest in super league.

Watson was appointed 1st grade by GM Tim Sheens.

2019 took them to GF (with hastings) - which was unheard of for a team like Salford to play in GF

2020 took then to challenge cup (without hastings)

48% winning percentage over 172 games- which is amazing for a team like Salford

Huddersfield 2021 until present

Generally Huddersfield are a middle of pack team

2021 took them to the challenge cup final 2021

2022 - Currently sitting 4th

53% winning percentage over 32 games - which again is pretty amazing for a team like Huddersfield

Good research @frullens 👍😊 Given how long Sheens was in the UK you would think a couple of guys might have impressed him.

Btw it looks like Woolfe is a near certainty to the Dolphins as an assistant with a view to taking over from Bennett in a couple of years.

I think the Super League is a best place for a coach to learn their trade as a head coach, as opposed to being an assistant at a NRL club, because you learn how to manage a team, coach under pressure,  etc that you don't get exposed to as an assistant.

Of the current UK coaches,  Watson and Woolf would be the best candidates.

Woolf is probably very similar to madge in style.

Watson though you could describe as a development coach, as he can get players playing well above themselves

I’m warming to the idea of Seibold. For some reason I think he might be good for us.

I’d have him ahead of Morris personally.

@frullens looks like he’s committed to his Super League job…

“At the moment, I do want to go over there eventually and do what Mal Reilly did a long time ago, but I’ve got a big project at Huddersfield and I came here to create a legacy.”

I am warming to the idea, it does have some strong similarities to Sheens appointment.

Doueihi on Siebold “I was a fan of his structures and systems and the way he coached. He looked after his players and I liked his methods in attack and defence.”

Spoke to someone who knows Noddy today. Prior to accepting the interim head coaching job Noddy made sure he could go back to his pathway role once he finishes as the interim coach. Smart play from Noddy, as I don’t think the tigers will win again this year (unfortunately).

Also, an interesting tid bit from a few weeks ago.

A week or two before Madge was sacked I saw him at the pub on a Thursday night meeting with Ben Gardner and Steve Price, the current Sharks assistant coach. It was a business meeting. Madge had a back pack and they had A4 sheets of paper and were looking at them intently. I have no idea what it was about. I thought it might have had something to do with the NZ team but as far as I can tell Price has had nothing to do with NZ.

Just FYI.

Steve Price the former Dragons coach?
