As noted widely, he's going from four straight premierships to a club facing a fourth straight wooden spoon. Money talks, obviously. But, I'm sure he'll be looking at doing his best, with the cattle around him and the capacity of coach Marshall ultimately determining how far his "best" can take WT in his season 1.

I think the challenge was what he wanted primarily. This is the biggest challenge in rugby league.

@mercy-rule When he arrives at Concord the losing mentality has to end and in part Richo will play a major part  , the players have to be told losing is not an option for 25 . I am sure Marshall has been told as well the pressure will be on from game 1  IMO … if the players attitude can change with the influx of successful signings I put Bird in that category  the team could well ge a very different beast!

Panthers champion Nathan Cleary has backed his outgoing halves partner Jarome Luai to help turn around the recent fortunes of Wests Tigers.

Cleary has played alongside Luai for a decade as they came through the ranks at Penrith together and he said the Samoa international is ready step up and be the chief playmaker for Wests Tigers next season.

“I think the way he stood up this year, not only with the way he played, but also his leadership just went to another level, and he is going to be a great asset for Wests Tigers,” Cleary said.

“I had a few special moments with him already and probably a few more over the next couple of days.

“I am going to miss him dearly, he is one of my best mates and we have playing alongside each other since we were 15 or 16 years old.

“I am just proud of him to be honest; it is not easy when the footy world sort of turns against you and the media turns against you, but he has corrected that with the way he plays and the way he goes about his business.

“We know how much he means to us, he is a family man and we have seen him grow up into the leader he is today.”

@snake I hope you're right. Luia and the other newbies have a pretty easy gig in that any improvement from last will be progress!!

As much as I (we?) hate what Ivan did to our club,  I can only admire what he has built over there. The culture that they have instilled in this group is incredible and what we need to aspire to.

Yep, we have every opportunity to do similar, just have to stop getting in our own way.

Hate to admit that those other cats have done well… but still will never forgive him for what he did to us ‼️‼️

Would have been better to get another coach at the time… but anyways.

At the time Maguire was the logical choice. He just didn’t have the ability to adapt and was hobbled by the front office and boardroom.

@helmesy was actually thinking of not hiring Ivan… but who else was on offer?

Was just going back over some news stories from Cleary’s appointment - doesn’t appear a formal search was had and no other potential candidates seemed to have got a mention.

I suppose the relationship between Ivan and Justin got that over the line. In hindsight another appointment would have been better.
