SMH reporting he might ask for a release to go back to Warriors on compassionate grounds. I’m not confident he’ll be here next year. If Seyfarth is in the 2nd row I’ll scream.
I was at 50/50, I reckon it’s not even that now.
He can't play anywhere else without our permission.
True, but I have no evidence to suggest we won’t eventually give in. The X factor here is Sheens.
I am more confident than I would usually be, Sheens gives me confidence and the answers I have heard direct from the club have me believing that we will stick solid.
@Garry but that’s not the Wests Tigers way. We’ll eventually cave as we always do and claim we got something out of it but won’t be able to say what it was.
I am happy with the direct answers I have heard from the club, I will be surprised if they do cave based on those answers.
Prepared to be surprised then.
so do we think IP will be asking for a release of his WT contract on compassionate grounds to go to NZ warriors ?
We have made recruitment decisions based on the understanding that Papalii will be a Tiger in 2023 as he signed a contract.
Opportunities in the market missed because you have a signed contract. Players moved on because you need to make room for him in your roster.
I call BS on compassionate reasons. He made no comment about that in his interview yesterday. He raised concerns about the change in coach.
The transfer system the NRL has is a farce. A transfer window similar to European football should be introduced. If you come off contract, you have 6 months from your expiry to negotiate with a club and sign for them next season. The November 1 deadline is silly. Having someone in your team for 12 months while they have signed for someone else the following season is nonsense. Not good for the supporters, players or the club.
It only leads to this kind of garbage. How are the Tigers made whole if they lose Papalii despite him having a contract? How is compassionate leave a valid excuse for breaking a contract? He is professional sport player on $600k a year? You family cannot move with you?

@mattvtiger agree totally.
The comments on NRL 360 tonight highlight exactly what you are saying. In talking about the Isaiah situation the journo's make repeated references to Parra and NZ countering our offer to the player. If he has a contract with WT then he is not able to negotiate with other clubs? Isnt that the whole reason why they have Nov 1 deadline - that is when you can negotiate for a new contract?
I can accept a Frizell - Brooks swap as long as Hastings and Doueihi are retained and Papalii is here.
Getting Frizell instead of Papalii is not an option as it is a backwards step.
I am resigned to the likelihood of Brooks moving on. Let’s hope Madden is the goods. I have my doubts though.
so do we think IP will be asking for a release of his WT contract on compassionate grounds to go to NZ warriors ?
I hope not mate. As discussed on 360 last night, if he does so it's surely having a lend. He hasn't mentioned NZ at all thus far, only that he enjoys being at Parra and (now that they can apparently match his contract with WT) there is talk that he wants to stay there.
Rumour from SEN that teh other back rower will be Frizzell in a swap with Brooks.
A Frizell (at the right price) & Papalii back row with Joffa & Hastings at lock works for me.
Me too! Would rather Frizell than Klemmer. Frizell is still athletic, damaging with the ball in hand, experienced edge defender and real competitor.
Exactly the player for Sheens.
We need to make it clear. You don’t honour your contract, you don’t play for 3 year. Simple. So there is nothing for him to think about it.
The real issue that would arise from WT allowing him to renege on the contract is not just the fact we miss out on a smart, quality signing. It's probably a bigger problem that our backrow player stocks have been diminished due to his signing and imminent arrival.
If he waits until November to tell us he doesn't want to play, we have to hold our ground. By then it will likely be impossible to find a suitable replacement that is available for '23 including the pre-season.
If the Frizell signing does eventuate he can't be seen as a substitute for IP, he is simply a good addition to our roster.
I know not very likely but would like in 2023
8. Joffa
9. Api
10. Stef
11. Papali'i
12. Frizell
13. Hastings
7. Brooks
6. Douhie
5. Ken M
4. Naden
3. Kepoa
2. Starford T
1. Laurie
With Nofo out can we use that ling service discount on brooks and also put towards Frizell
that is a very competitive team
Good to see Clint Newton from the RLPA telling Papali'i to honour his contract.

I found it interesting that Dave Riccio on NRL 360 was advocating that the Tigers should cut ties with Papalii now so there is time to go back into the player market.
I find this type of advice fascinating coming from a journalist. It suggests to me that Papalii's players manager has told Riccio off the record his players' intention at years end. No use doing it now, it will turn into a media circus and become a distraction to the player/team in the lead up to the finals.
The mere fact the player believes he is a position to make such a decision is what I find the most bemusing part in this.
In the real world, an attempt to break a binding contract, in particular a contract where a party has made other financial decisions based on the existence of that contract, is not an easy thing to do. Often there is threats of litigation, or in instances of employment, enforced periods of non-compete.
If I were the Tigers, I wouldn't wait til November and be left to scramble. Nor would I cut ties with him now. I also wouldn't provide a gentle reminder to his player manager. I would be getting the lawyers involved and issuing him a letter reminding him of his legal obligations. Further get him to confirm that he intends to honour those legal obligations.
No use mucking around and waiting til November for him to 'make his decision'.

Having the support of the players union strengthens the club's position in my opinion.

Certainly does.
Then the idiot captain comes out and say that Papali'i should do what makes him happy and has every right to reconsider.
