Home ground strategy poll

I think we have to get away from LO and Campbelltown ....if we pick either one, there are no winners. It's been divisive for over 20 years.

I agree that we have to have one Home Ground, otherwise we have no identity.

The COE has been positioned at Concord, so I ask the question, is the Showground still suitable for use?

It is a smaller ground and it is within reach of the COE and Wests Ashfield.

It that an option?

@cqtiger I'd like one home ground. I'm sceptical regarding Campbelltown. We've never drawn big crowds there and I don't think we will in the future (I can't recall any sporting team doing well there).

It’s a highly divided question Avo,and I know in recent years we haven’t pulled big crowds there, but if we’re winning the crowds follow in turn.2005 we broke the ground record with 20,527,and were regularly posting very respectable attendances in 2010/11the last of the glory days.Nowadays the capacity is 17,500,and the closest we got to that was 16,783 against the Titans in 2016.

In recent years with our fortunes at a low ebb, coupled with a lack of promotion and atrocious match allocations,we’ve been lucky to crack 7 or 8,000.Everyone loves a winner!

@garry I wasn't aware of that.

It's a shame the AFL got in there, as I thought It would have been a good option.

Exactly the right location but not an option unfortunately.

Wests Tigers legend Ben Elias believes the club must settle on one home ground.

Currently, the Tigers play their home games across three venues - Leichhardt Oval, CommBank Stadium and Campbelltown Stadium.

While splitting the games allows a different fan experience at the three venues across the season, Elias believes it’s come at a detriment to the team.

As a result, the former dummy-half called for the club to settle on one ground to help create a true home ground advantage.

“A big one that I believe we should do is we have to find a home,” Elias said on SEN 1170 Mornings.

“We have three venues where we play throughout the season - Leichhardt Oval, CommBank (Stadium) and we’ve got Campbelltown Stadium.

“We’ve got to find a home where the opposition fear, that they don’t want to come to Leichhardt Oval or Campbelltown Stadium or CommBank Stadium.

“They need a home where they know every blade of grass, and when they go out on their paddock it has to be their fortress where no one wants to be there with them.

“I think the decision needs to be made on that fairly imminently, until that time we’re basically nomads.

“We go from one to another, where you play every second week.

“At least (with one home) you know exactly where you’re playing, where your boots go, your locker, your training, the run of the oval … all of those things make a difference on game day.

“I think we need to make a decision and make it fairly quickly.”

SEN host Matt White agreed with Elias, adding that one home ground would also help generate a deeper connection for the club’s fans.

“It not only makes a difference from the players’ perspective,” White added.

“It also makes a massive difference from the fans’ perspective.”

The Tigers open up their season with a Round 1 game against the Storm at the biggest of their three home venues, CommBank Stadium.

I think Benny should settle in Antarctica.

Remembering that Benny was a strong proponent of a move to Perth,Antarctica might not be a bad destination, but considering his ability to court every media outlet it may not be far or cold enough. How about Mars!

Benny was a smart and innovative player, what a shame his commentary and opinions on all things footy and in particular Wests Tigers doesn’t match his playing ability. Does he even know that most teams these days train at a different venue to which they play.

So some people are saying that if we don’t go ‘all in’ for the SW then MacArthur will abandon us?

By that logic, if we did go all in for the SW then the inner west would abandon us?

I would like one home ground in Sydney (Tamworth and Brisbane are set) for the future but I keep reading posts that still have multiple Sydney home grounds.

Do people want one home ground in Sydney going forward, yes or no?

One home ground is my preference. I think we need to decide who/what this club represents and go with it.

I understand one home ground on a very simplistic basis (100% NOT suggesting that your POV is simplistic @helmesy). If we have one home ground IMO it must be CSS, and I dont think  that will work. It is going to alienate MANY supporters and I dont think that that region has demonstrated that it will support a strong club on its own.

FWIW....for me, status quo or LO & CSS split.

I have been lucky (?) enough to spend time with Benny twice.

The first time was I was at the Tigers GF Luncheon as a guest of Steve Ghosn and after the lunch we went back to Balmain Leagues to kick on (a story in itself, a Wests Magpies director wanted to punch on with me in the bus). Sitting at the table drinking was myself, Steve Ghosn, Sirro, Benny & Scotty Gale months before he passed of MND.

Benny spent the whole day looking after Scotty Gale like a silk worm including taking him to the toilet (and Scotty was in a bad way). I left thinking that Benny was misunderstood and one of the best humans on the planet.

Some years later, I was at a dinner with business associates to do with a large real estate venture and I have no idea why Benny was there (I can only assume he was interested in investing or they were trying to sell him on it). People I know and respect paid for a limo to pick him up and drive him out to near Harrington Park (Narellan/Camden/our supposed home land) and I sat next to him again. He spent the whole night bitching about how far out it was, the shitty limo drive and wondering out loud why he was even there. Im not talking quietly to me the buy sitting next to him but loudly to the whole table. IMO he was under the influence of something. I left that night thinking he is not a great bloke.

Complex bloke. Very successful, but something is not right.

Call me crazy but why doesn’t COE at concord and Home games at CSS make a perfect combo. Keeping our foot in both camps. I personally don’t buy the “MacArthur won’t support a team that only plays there on weekends” arguement because in practice many professional teams have distance between them and the immediate community. What’s important to people is what the club does for their community and by all accounts the club is rapidly improving its treatment of the junior leagues out at Campbelltown. Maybe it won’t happen overnight but if a club is investing money in your kids and playing in your local region every other week I think that is a huge commitment and something that will engender support. The fact that the senior team trains at concord and offers the players a chance to live somewhere around the city centre (or indeed anywhere in Sydney given how central concord is and connected via motorways) is a bonus in my view.
