@frullens The stats actually point what your saying is correct … it’s all about coaching . A team that has zero idea how to get a ball back from a short goal line kick off but continues to use it and the opposition scores every time this is Brain dead coaching it’s a joke ! This is one example of what the mind set is from the fools in the coaches box !

Marshall is coach guys!

But mate, I think if we did have some decent halves that could execute - Sheens, Benji and Ribbie would be having so much fun, coming up with plays and we'd be setting the comp alight.

That's what's so frustrating

Mate if people cant see the difference in the style of play this year as opposed to 3 years under Madge, i cant help them.

I can see the difference in the style of play.

But the results are the same - so far.

Qnd unless we get 2 decent halves, it will remain the same

Top 8 2023

We can’t do the basics, tackle, pass, count numbers etc etc and we also don’t compete on each play. Why, I have no answer.

Storm do these basics very well even and as such get results.  We looked flashy at times but no points came of it.

@mike my word for this game is ‘Combinations’

I think we finally found some and then we stick Blore in the team and move our Ice to the right. Whereas the round one team Blore was right edge. Also Naden changing from left to right side. As for Kepaoa he can’t defend either side!! It’s just a nightmare.

We are short on troops and playing an understrength powerhouse, lets establish that as a baseline. Very disappointing level of effort and commitment. So many times Storm simply outcompeted us for the ball. Bateman was outstanding all night, Bula did well, Papali'i possibly his biggest effort in our colours. Big effort by Noffa as well. Blore a much improved effort.

Cant believe people accepting Wakehams performance, he was rubbish. TDS didnt have a good night but I can see a first grader in there (not yet).

Im going to say something counter intuitive. Tim Sheens is a GREAT coach. This team is under the pump, under staffed, no halves, out best prop out, backs against the wall. The style of attack we used for the first 20 in second half with changing angles, different runners, isolating NAS etc, was GREAT coaching and it worked for that time but we ran out of puff and ability but that period had Sheens all over it.

Agree with most of what you said but disagree re TDS. His service from dummy half was very crisp and looked dangerous when he ran the ball. I think he belongs in first grade and thought we looked better when he was on rather than Simpkin.

How many passes went out the back last night? We are a disorganised ramble. Our only try came from a couple of rebounds and we barely fired a shot otherwise. It’s going to be a long few weeks with players out.

if Brooks leaves next year this is our reality, we missed him tonight when he was not there, wakeham was not nrl standard.

There are not a lot of options at this point, given the lack of depth in the halves (thanks Tim!).

The good last night - Blore and Papalii looking dangerous on the edges, Nofa’s form, a bright debut from Da Silva, Bula’s consistency.

The not so good - To’a doesn’t seem suited to 5/8, his passing was off, he didn’t run much and cannot kick. Bateman at 8 is a hard no for me. Our edges looking shaky in defence and Pole looks lost. Wakeham is what he is, a mediocre half. Kepoa was quite poor in defence. I don’t think Tupou could be blamed for that leaky left edge.

Our skills in defending kicks is really poor. It’s an area Bula needs to work on, but overall we lack urgency. Poor Tupou was left completely isolated for Warbrick’s second try.

At this stage of the season, it’s hard to see us avoiding a second wooden spoon. We simply cannot score points, and the team with the most points wins. After 16 rounds, our attack has been effective in scoring for about 100 minutes in total  (the Cowboys game, 10 minutes v Bulldogs and 10 minutes v Canberra). That is simply not good enough.

@plundermonkey That’s an interesting username mate, but welcome to therapy 🤪

Would like to get your thoughts on our coach coming out of retirement and leading this team on the frontline.

i agree we looked better with him on, he looked quite threatening through the middle and was backing up multiple times. He did however get caught out of position several times early in the set where he didn’t make it to the ruck and wakeham was playing hooker. I guess his fitness is a bit below standard

I don't really agree with that. It wasn't overly dissimilar to what we've seen all season, including Brooks.

Part of that is on the various halves and part is on the coaching staff.

On Da Silva he looks a talent but also needs to work on a few little things. He will be class but I’m worried we’re being forced to rush him which could hinder his development a little

@loganr21 Thanks - my username is based on something Stephen King said about Donald Trump and his cronies.

On Sheens, I’m a long term sceptic. I thought and still think his record since he left the Tigers didn’t justify his appointment as coach.

I’m not a full on conspiracy theorist, but it certainly helped him that the team ran dead in the second half of 2021. And that the recruitment process he was running didn’t find anyone else suitable.

That finish to 2021 has left some lasting damage on the psychology of the team.

He also has a bad record with recruiting halves. He gambled and won on Scott Prince, which was great, but then lost him. The Tigers treaded water from 2007 - 2009 (John Morris, Matthew Head), then had Robert Lui fall into our lap.

This time, letting Hastings and Madden go and recruiting no quality cover for Brooks and Doueihi has proven disastrous. And whatever he’s selling as an attacking philosophy, the players, 16 games in, are not buying it.

I like that he is prepared to throw young talent in the team, but we’ve got to be able to win a few games, and thanks to our dire halves situation, that isn’t likely.

Cheers
