Long time listener, first time poster!
My question is - Are we still in the hunt for Nikora for 2023? If not, are we going after a 2nd rower or looking to develop from within? Bit of a worry when our best three 2nd rowers have all signed elsewhere in the same year...
Thanks Norsington, welcome! We might have some signing news/an update in the next week.
Tantalisingly cryptic........
Would be very interested in a discussion about NRL matches being over refereed and everything being over analysed, especially by the bunker.
It honestly appears to me, and I watch at least 3 - 4 games every week, that in all NRL matches referees are looking for indiscretions and penalties. If rules are rules, every NRL game should be officiated equally. But if you compare how State of Origin matches and many NRL matches are officiated, it's worlds apart. I love how they let SOO matches flow, with less interventions and minor indescretions that don't really impact the game are just let go. But an NRL match, especially when a lower positioned or lower regarded team is playing, they penalise for such minor things, that really wouldn't impact the game much... But a penalty or repeat set can actually influence and change a games outcome.
At the end of the day, surely the NRL want a better product to market and sell. Get the referees and bunker to take a step back, let the game flow and surely we'll have a better product?

Having every match refereed equally is overrated and has led to a lot of the issues the game now has.

How so?

I spoke about this on the pod a couple of weeks ago, I don't want to see all refs attempting to be robots. They are individuals with their own strengths and weaknesses. One ref may be more authoritarian, another may let the game flow and manage the game. That is ok, consistency across games is overrated, consistency in one match is crucial.

@garry I understand your point and agree to a point. But surely you don't want referees over controlling games, giving penalties because of minor indescretions, over analysising and influencing outcomes? Do you see the difference in way SOO games are refereed? At the moment it's not about referee style or differences, it's the different matches that are being managed by virtue of how big or important the match is.
Are you happy with how yesterday's match was handled? It was pretty consistent.

No I am not happy with how the match was handled yesterday. The problem is we are trying to make the refs all robots, get rid of the bunker influence on the game, implement the captains challenge for try scoring situations and allow the refs to use their personality to ref games.

Lucky they are such well behaved boys and not swearing and bitching
Hi Joel, Eddie, Steve, Garry, Declan
I don't normally listen to Westslife podcast however yesterday's episode included a session exchange between Lee Hagipantelis and one of the hosts Rob. It was interesting as Lee mentions he will not come on a podcast but is happy to talk with members not fans.
So does this mean as Garry, Steve, Eddie and Declan are season ticket holders or "members" will Lee talk to you but not Joel who is not a season ticket holder. Or does member mean a member of wests ashfield. My opinion supporters are supporters that is what grows a fan base.
Would love to get the teams thoughts it was an interesting sms exchange, hopefully you get the chance to listen to first 15 minutes.

Ive never listened to Westslife podcast (sounds like a church). Is that an "official" club poddy?
@tiger5150 No not official just a couple of guys doing a pod I have only listened a couple of times, they swear a fair bit but it is not that bad. The first 15 mins were good
It was very interesting.
I thought Lee's response as chairman of our club was very unprofessional and has changed my perspective of his character.
Couple of interesting things for me.
Firstly, Lee said he wouldn't go on the westslife pod because he didn't want to legitimise the pod. However the pod is officially sponsored by Wests Ashfield - which is a fair endorsement by the clubs majority owner.
Secondly, Lee offered on 2GB radio for any supporters to email him directly and he'd respond. But then said to Rob he'd only respond to paying members. It's interesting because Lee, Justin and Sheens have all referred to the 400,000 strong supporter base. But now Lee has inferred that only paying members should be listened to.
Lastly, the Westslife pod are strong supporters of the Club, have been huge madge supporters and support the playing group. But Rob has always been very critical of the front office, particularly Justin Pascoe and the board. When Rob vents about the front office, he does go ove rthe top, but I think it resonates with many of our fan base who share his frustration.
Lee said on 2GB radio that everyone is accountable, including the board and CEO. However the lack of avenues for fans to share their frustration or hold front office to account, means that the only spaces it comes out as ein social media or fan media such as podcasts.
Top 8 2023
Lee really does need to shut the hell up. As a lawyer, Im sure he knows how to speak in such a way as not to damage or defame, but being a lawyer doesnt necessarily mean he knows when to talk.
