Wests Tigers spine in 2023

I think something that deserves its own thread is discussion around the make up of the spine next year. As far as I can see there are many questions here to be solved and very little actual confirmed by the club at this point.

Strangely, only Api has a confirmed spine position at this stage.

Other questions - Staines or Laurie at fullback (if strong rumours are true). Brooks? Hastings at lock? Doueihi at centre? Etc.

I think all these questions have us fans a bit unsettled after such a poor year.

Think it should be

13. Hastings

9. Api

7. Brooks

6. Laurie

3. Douhie

1. Staines

we have pace in halves and Hastings controlling play from lock with Douhie power running out wide at centre. Don't particularly like Staines at fb as he does not have great ball playing but he has pace.

I don’t mind that at all, I think it has potential.

I think the reason we don’t really know what our spine looks like is because Benji is swinging for the fences in terms of recruitment and until we see how that plays out. Munster, Moses, brown, sualli, Tedesco are all targets and maybe it’s a long shot but I think we are going for a bit scalp to catalyse a rebuild and I think the club had the money and the 3rd party agreements to make it happen. We just need one fish to bite

So true, a Munster signing now would shift momentum for us and provide the new regime with a huge boost in confidence.

I agree completely, we can’t go into 2023 with what we currently have on the books up front.

Don’t like it, but a reckon that’s what Sheens will go with.

I’d play Matamua there. We’re very unlikely to play finals next year, may as well give him a chance. I also think Hastings will struggle defending at lock every week.

Hastings needs to play at 7. I can’t see him signing a new deal with us unless that’s the case.

Douehi should get a crack at 6 beside Hastings, this is the one combination we haven’t seen enough of yet to make a judgment. If that doesn’t work then give Laurie a chance there.

Staines/Laurie at FB.

Matamua at lock.

Brooks should be no where near the conversation.

fine with Hastings playing 7 but Brooks plays 6 then

Douhie plays centre or leaves

I think Douehi will be shown the door at the earliest opportunity. He’s not a Sheens type of player.
