Great job on the spreadsheet Gary. It really spells out the reality. No real opportunity for wholesale improvement for 12-18months but after that there is scope which will depend on how well Sheens & Benj can recruit. Hoping for some quality to come through the juniors but there doesnt seem to be any in the next 2-3 years until the matts boys start coming through.
After creating the spreadsheet, I am convinced the club is targeting the 2025 season. Every signing now impacts that season so I think they will be all made with the eye to what the squad will look like in 2025. Benji really had the best opportunity I have ever seen given to a rookie coach, he has 2 years to build his ideal squad before he takes over the reigns.
I also think that the targeting of 2025 was why they decided to move madge on when they did, if he wasn't going to be coach in 2025 then we don't want him building the roster for 2025.
You last sentence makes a lot of sense. We've waited 10 years, what is another 3 or 4?
Every signing now has to have 2025 in mind, but each of those signings made to improve the roster in 2025 improves the roster for the following year as well. Hopefully we make enough of the signings in the next 6 to 12 months that we see significant improvement in the next 2 years.
Agreed but IMO after upgrading juniors (again IMO if the juniors arent top quality, let them go) we might have only 3 or 4 slots open for next year and we cant afford to fill them with average players. Need a good prop, big fast outside back/fullback and ideally a quality half(none available). Swap the half for a good 2RF.
I started a thread a while back trying to plan out the roster for 3 years time.
And a lot of people were saying it was ridiculous and too far away.
But to my mind, you say, we want to be top 4 team in 3 years.
Then every signing or re-signing must be thinking about 3 years time and if that player is top 4 standard by 3 years

The issue is, that is a difficult way to look at it as every squad has players that are lower tier players. Under a salary cap you cannot go out and buy the best player on every position as you have to also find players that are value for money and can perform above their pay scale if given an opportunity. You also have to spend up in the right areas and cut corners in other areas. It is a difficult thing to plan out which is why I think we originally brought Sheens back to the club to assist with.

Raised in the other forum but a guy like Suiali would be worth paying fullback money on a 5y deal. He’s the real deal. Every club has 2 or 3 players who would start as our fullback. Pay Suiali $1m a year and get this club moving.

I would never say that's ridiculous mate! Surely the best clubs have 3-5yr plans in place all the time, regardless of how well they are going!
In fact it is simply a must to run a business properly.
Wests Tigers Contract List
Will be updating this sheet over the next couple of days to allow greater functionality.
Thanks for this Garry you have nailed it!
Like others Im going to assume that Tommy re-signs.
That would leave 3 spots. But I am also going to jump to the conclusion that we lose at least 5 other players between now and November 1. The likes of
Liddle $350k
Gildart $350k
Peachey $350k
Brooks $800k (subject to us paying some of his freight)
are all on the chopping block
If this plays out we could have 8 roster spots and around $2mill to play with (again just a ball park figure)
All very wishful thinking but I am convinced we need this level of player turnover to be successful next year
Firstly - yes thanks @garry as this makes it easy for us to understand.
Secondly I think you are on the money here Mick. Benji best get that star power happening so we can fill those spots with good players 'cherry picked' as Sheens has been describing. This will really determine how successful we are in '23.
@tiger5150 its weird that Sheens has been saying this so often in interviews. By saying we have to wait a few years he is pretty much writing off every player who is contracted for 2023/24.
My personal view is that our ceiling this season was probably just outside the top 8 (assuming we had a better run with injuries). Even at full strength we are sub standard.
Whether that changes for next year, its certainly not looking good.
Dean Ritchie says he is confident that Woods, Brown and Staines are all likely joining. I cant say I am thrilled about any of them. Where do these guys fit in the top 30 picture? I cant see much space for them as it stands?

I agree. I'm not sure Woods is an upgrade on any of our props, Brown is on the wane whilst I feel Blore is on the rise. Stains is over-rated but could be decent at centre with Naden or AD.
These signings aren't the difference between 16th and 8th and they're the sort of signings we need to target.
The current version of Woods doesn’t add anything to the team. It would be a step backwards by the new coaching staff.
O'Kane and Sione Fainu upgraded to the Top 30 for the remainder of the season, Fainu into top 30 for 2023 and 24.
That puts our squad at 28 players for the remainder of 2022.

I cant work it out but at least there seems to be some plan to what is going on?
My first look at this thread. Thanks to everyone for putting this together.
PS I can’t wait to see the back of Tamou
If there is anyone who wants to help keep the list up to date, I'm happy to share the document in this thread with a few people.
