I was around the age of 12 or 13 years of age when first got my taste of horse racing. It was channel 9’s wide world of sports. They’d show the last 4 or so races of the day. Kenny Callender use to twirl his tote board with the prices and Johnny Tapp would do a fair dinkum call.
I followed tips from these two guys for years, with some of my own tips made a little profit here and there.

Until one day when Johnny uttered the words ‘ this is the best country horse going around atm’ after winning the welter race in the last. I made sure I kept an eye out for him in the future. Back then I had to buy the paper every Friday to see if he was running the next day. Unbeknowns to me the horses also run mid week and I missed out on a few wins on this horse. He’d race at places I’d never heard of like Orange, Cowra and Bathurst to name a few.

But luckily one Friday I saw he was in a very rich race at Randwick. I said to my dad can you put $1 each way on him please. He was 150-1 and my dad said, might be good just to watch him go around today. I said no ‘he love’s the long straight at Randwick.
I even convinced my dad to pump up the bet to 2 each way 👍… so glad he did because the horse saluted and we pocketed around $280. The name of the horse you might ask was Moville Peter. And I never missed any of his career races from that day on.

That is so good. Something you won’t forget for a long, long time. Have to admit I can’t recall Moville Peter but you can bet your life I would if I’d had something on him that day.

In relation to horse racing, fun fact

Lonhro in all his Group 1 wins were weight for age races. What some called him a meat pie champion as he never won a handicap Group 1 amongst all his wins

He won the tramway handicap 1990 as it was then. Was trained by Jono Johnson out in Orange. There were numerous Moville named horses. Sara Eddie and non other than our chairman Lee 😅😂

Mister Hemsworth racing on Saturday at Newcastle race 7 in a 1500m race. Likely place chance again. Has not missed a placed since debut in Australia

This is kind of self indulgent I know but what the hell. Some of my most favourite things about footy and horse racing are the smells, not all smells obviously. But the smell of hot dogs, chips, beer, the lineament outside the dressing sheds, the horses and, of course, the turf when you walk in that gate. Next time you go to the footy or races just stand for a moment and take a deep breath after you enter.
My favourite time of year is mid to late February. There is a certain smell that comes from the freshly cut lawn at that time of year. It’s different and to me it signals that Autumn is not far away and with that the footy. That is my most favourite smell in all the world.

So true!

Backed two of Annabel’s last Saturday at Rosehill, she’s got a huge chance in the Slipper with “Learning To Fly”. Lucky I backed those, helped me break even for the day. I’ll have a good look at “Mister Hemsworth” tomorrow. I like the jockey.

@russtutty63 Had a chat with Annabelle she said the only possible danger she can see is Maralago (Anthony cummings) but she thinks it will come from behind Mister Hemsworth.
Plan is to be one out one back let Painte go to the front with julimar and we get the cushy run just behind

I have taken Mister Hemsworth to win into tigers to make the top 8
$2 × $4.50 = $9
Also I will take Mister Hemsworth to win and Newcastle to get Most losses
$2 x $6 = $12

Just saw the result Jedi, pretty tough mate. Have to admit was thinking about getting on but just a bit skinny for me. I once went to Gosford and had a lash at the favourite in a 4 horse race. Ray Warren called it, the race was so boring Rabs called mid race “..and now might be a good time to grab yourself a Tooheys..” Anyway, I lost yet again. Hard lessons I guess. I’m sure a win isn’t far away for Mister Hemsworth.

@russtutty63 if you get a chance to watch a replay Prebble had it 3 wide in a field of 8 not his best ride probably a 3/10 although wouldn't have beaten the winner

Hopefully another start in a few weeks had all the others covered pretty easy so likely Gosford or similar again

Sounds like a poor ride. What was the speed like? Should he have gone forward you think? Why did he decide to remain in that position you think?

@russtutty63 speed was not too bad mate I think he just sat back thinking he could be 3 wide and still win. Problem was second fave just sat on his back and went straight passed him.

Yeah, I saw the replay. A win can’t be far away.
