In a stunning turnaround, sacked Wests Tigers chairman Barry O’Farrell is on the verge of returning to his role after a series of crisis meetings between the NRL and the Tigers’ majority owner.
Just nine days after the Holman Barnes Group (HBG) punted O’Farrell and three other independent directors, the former NSW premier has been asked to return to the role for what will be his third stint as the leader of the joint venture.
This masthead has been told the NRL has relayed its concerns about the state of the club to HBG, with the conversations set to result in O’Farrell’s return.
O’Farrell is aware of the NRL’s intent to see him reappointed and is giving strong consideration to accepting the role. A decision is expected as early as Thursday despite speculation that Balmain legend Benny Elias was going to be handed the role as chairman.
Neither Barry O’Farrell nor executives at HBG responded to calls on Wednesday night.

Holy smoke! HBG underestimated PVL.

I think this is good news given Barry's political background and relationship with Richo. But so much damage has already been done. We've lost Richo and have completely ruined our reputuation in the eyes of potential new players and existing players who were looking to resign.

what on earth. Looks like PVL gave HBG an ultimatum. Still lots of details to work out but can’t imagine that Barry comes back without assurances. Maybe HBG just take their win that they killed Richo and try and rescue their ownership.

Agreed 100%. We'll see where things end up and whether it's a net positive overall. The only thing that will make up for losing Richo is HBG out! Let the roller-coaster continue!

Dare I say it.......
If this was to happen, it is the shortest route back to STABILITY and is PVL led as well as the pressure put to HBG by the pending rally. As i said a week ago, IMO people baying for blood or for the WT to be sold off are likely to be very disappointed.
First step needs to be reinstatement of an (the?) independent board.
Second step, a mechanism to ensure it STAYS independent.
thirdly, replacing Richo (if possible).

Re the calls for “stability” from the HBG…bloody hell,
Seems a lot can change in 5 days.
Wow. It's like watching an episode of Melrose Place.
If Barry can get reappointed, what's to say Richo couldn't?

if you listen to Chammas on the Bye Round it sounds like a lot of this was about bad blood between Richo and HBG because Richo wouldn’t toe the line with the meat raffle crowd
What about the other independent board members?
Big question remains will there be a majority independents on the reconfigured board. If I was Barry I would say that to return he would need the 3 other independents to return. That would actually strengthen the independents long term as it would prove that the NRL was in control not HBG.
