Indigenous players make up 13 per cent of NRL so why are there almost no coaches?

Malcolm Norman Meninga

origin and national coach

not much of a nrl club coach though

Laurie Daley

nsw coach

Arthur Beetson

A number of indigenous coaches have been in the game and done well

Mal is not aboriginal.

He is indigenous though.

Torres Strait Islands?

Yes, Torres Strait Islands is considered Indigenous.

He isnt Torres Strait Islander, South Sea Islander.

Yeah I corrected myself further down the thread, sorry mate.

In memory of Geoff Chisholm (1965-2022)

Weird subject / question I can't see why the SMH is trying to build up a racial theme

Is it the SMH or is it Indigenous players or just society atm ?

My opinion is that there is a degree of institutionalized racism for want of a better word. It's just that over time most coaches have been ex-players from a certain demographic. That sort of perpetuates itself. When you raise these points it tend to lead to some change.

Its an interesting one as Rugby League has been historically quite inclusive of indigenous Australians. Just 6 years after indigenous Australians were given the vote we had an indigenous captain of the National team who went on to coach at all levels of the game and is an immortal, the second indigenous immortal also coached at all levels.

We may need to put in some pathways to help indigenous players to transition into coaching roles but I don't think there is any explicit racism in this issue.

Exactly ...some of our top rep coaches in recent times have been Indigenous ....Mal Meninga ,Artie Beetson and Laurie Daley
