Good signs at Leichhardt yesterday..given the time slot, conditions and opposition ..

Puts a case for the traditional ground..

First priority is to fix the drainage. It was like watching a game from the ‘60s

I was involved in the relaying of the turf at LO about 10years ago. They completely dug up the whole playing surface, reinstalled drainage and graded substrata. LO has state of the art playing surface technology.

Again, I think people miscatagorise LO based on the "nostalgia" aspect. Its a good ground and has had quite a bit of money spent on it over the last 10 years as Inner West Council are trying to utilise it fully with Soccer and Waratahs.

Unfortunately it didn’t hold up at all well last night, especially in the corners. The drainage needs fixing.

Ah Im with you......outside the playing surface, its just standard grass in soil. The State of the Art stuff is only within the playing surface.

Appreciate that. It’s just not acceptable by the council to think it stops at the rectangle. I’m watching the Dragqueens game and Jubilee is luxurious by comparison and extends to the fence.

We were lucky nobody was seriously injured last night.

This is the type of short changing of details at Leichhardt that just makes it a relic. It’s just not good enough.

I hope some of the $50M is spent on fixing these sort of details.

I appreciate your point of view and understand it. I'd temper it with a thought that if you are against LO, these things appear a big deal, if you love it , not so much. I (a LO lover) would argue you are much more likely to injure your self on a camera etc on side line, but its a weak point.

I'd suggest to you its a chicken and egg argument. Inner West Council are unlikely to splash out big bucks with a tenuous tenancy link (WT playing 3 games pa). If more games are committed, I'd suggest more money would be spent and not just for one year. Maybe if WT commit to 6 - 10 games over an extended period, upgrades happen, the ground is more attractive to soccer & Waratahs, it build momentum and becomes what the LO lovers hope it could be.

Not against Leichhardt per say. It’s just not up to the standard needed for a modern stadium. The drainage ending at the rectangle is just one example. If they spend the $50M wisely I’ll be all for playing more games at Leichhardt. It’s attention to detail that is required.

My concern is that the $50M will be spent in window dressings and that many of the fundamental deficiencies of Leichhardt will remain.

Just as a reminder

Wests tigers average home regular season crowd for the 5 main grounds:

WSS - 10,651 - 12 games

LO - 12,607 - 87 games

CSS - 11,769 - 86 games

SFS - 18,332 - 20 games

SA - 22,397 - 45 games

I'm now at the position of a 2 ground strategy LO & CSS only - as it reinforces our identity and supporter base.

However  this can only with of both grounds are improved as comfortable and attractive, with greater capacity - ideally LO around 22k and CSS around 27-30k

Edit

WSS average affected by covid more than others

If I had to sign up to an option today, it would be a LO/CSS strategy. Agree money needs to be spent on both to increase capacity and comfort.  Its a BIG upgrade to get CSS to 30K

Remember SA is flattered by the Easter games. SFS numbers are just for regular games in the 2006-2012 era

Penrith will be 25-30k

At least CSS has NRL and A league

The hard thing is, do we need to play full time at CSS and LO in order to attract funding?

Of the 45 game splayed at SFS less than handful would be our home Easter games. Looking at the biggest crowds, most are early in the year on the early 2000s - possibly we played in some double headers?

But it's a good point, as neither CSS or LO can handle though marquee events in their current state.

The Bulldogs game on a wet Friday probably gets to 25k at SFS (more bulldogs fans and more people who would attend if they arent getting wet).

assuming they make $10 per person that’s another 100k to the club. That could be another development officer in SW Sydney

If the teams were doing better you’d get that easy.

Name me one World-class sporting organization that plays in a suburban home ground with an 18,000 capacity?

Linking World Class and the WT's is like linking Glenn McGrath and World Class batsmen

Watford, Burnley and Watford play in the largest World Class competition in the world (EPL) and have home grounds about the same at LO/CSS. This is the LARGEST comp in the world and in a nation with a population 2.5 x the population of Australia and 8 x the population of NSW.

If you adjust for population, only 4 of the 19 home grounds are larger than LO or CSS.

The EPL is played in an environment a lot more dense than the NRL, more teams, closer together, more people, denser populations and NONE of them are sharing stadia.

I know very little about soccer but I have my suspicions that Watford and Burnley aren't at the same levels as Arsenal, Man U and Liverpool.

Yeah Watford is going back to the Championship ....Burnley probably / possibly going down ...need to win tomorrow to stay up

These clubs have played 40 times and cracked 25k 5 times and none of them were at 6pm on a Friday

Sample of 1 but if I could take my kids to a game with good transport, comfortable seating and nice catering I would have taken them to a Friday 6pm game because I could still get them to bed at a reasonable time and they would get to experience a night game.
