In all seriousness, this is where Wests Ashfield is most comfortable. For all our sake please sell the NRL franchise to outside investors and just run the juniors and the NSW cup under the Magpies brand. Running a pokie den and a Chinese restaurant has nothing in common with running a successful NRL club. The Bronco’s and Melbourne are 100% committed to being successful NRL clubs. No distractions, no boards stacked with amateurs.

MMM going a bit feral on Tigers management

https://t.co/aUNkNHRnNs

I've been sympathetic to Justin Pascoe

  1. But when a commercial radio can down 15 mins dedicated solely to how unprofessional he is, merited or not,  surely it's time, for the good of the club,  to fall on your sword.

Alternatively, the media trawls this forum and WTF for talking points and merely regurgitate them. There is nothing substantive in that report. If the CEO being on his phone is the biggest problem we are in a good place.

No we are not in a good place. It was inappropriate and just adds to failures of Pascoe to understand, especially since the lack of success on the field, what is required to be CEO of a Rugby League club. If we were winning no one would care, but we are not winning and he oblivious to the behaviour required under those circumstances.

I must say I’m confused by the Pascoe phone thing. Aren’t phones banned from the change rooms from before kick off until the game ends?

hmm yes I think that’s the rule. Didn’t James Roberts get in trouble for this?

NRL rules state players cannot have their mobile phones with them in the dressing room from 60 minutes prior to kick-off.

NRL bans mobile phone from dressing rooms

SMH

ROY MASTERS

In a move to shut down possible communication between NRL players and gamblers, mobile phones will be banned from dressing rooms on game day.

Channel Nine television footage has in the past shown players who have been injured during games, speaking on mobile phones. Such footage has sparked integrity concerns that an injured player could talk to betting agencies, or big punters, keen to know whether the player will return to the field.

In reality, the players are probably speaking to family members, possibly allaying fears of a serious injury, but half-truths, like half-bricks, travel further in NRL land, which is always keen to hear the negative connotation.

Coaches have embraced the ban, relieved that players will not be communicating on social media in the minutes before a match.

Given the distractions of social media and the small psychological and tactical advantages coaches seek, mobile phones are a continuing source of frustration. However, it is understood the NRL is introducing the ban solely for integrity reasons. Some players' incoming texts could be inquiries from gamblers keen to know the starting team which, traditionally, an NRL club was only required to post one hour before the match.

In an allied move, NRL clubs will be required to name a squad of 21 players on a Tuesday, with two players to be deleted on the eve of the final training session. A squad of 17 must then be announced in the standard one hour before kick-off.

This is designed to prevent a club from ambushing an opponent with the unexpected return of a big-name player to the starting team. Betting agencies will welcome the latter move because of complaints from punters that they often lodge a bet early in the week and are also blind-sided by key, late changes.

While gambling outlets pay lucrative product fees for fielding on NRL teams and are required to co-operate with the NRL on integrity issues, they are entitled to complain their client teams sometimes deceive them with information.

Only four mobile phones will be allowed in an NRL dressing room – belonging to the club doctor, the football manager and two designated personnel. Players often use mobile phones to listen to music in the dressing room but will be able to access this via digital audio devices.

A possible mobile phone ban was raised last year with suggestions players would be forced to deposit them with club security before entering the dressing room but this is unlikely.

Rather, it's anticipated self-regulation will apply, with coaches the co-operative policemen.

The ban and the new protocol regarding team changes will be tabled for approval at the next meeting of the ARLC on January 31.

@helmesy so it’s only players? It doesn’t include support staff and coaches?

@helmesy Your the man at the "Helm" 🤣 I bet you've heard that a few times, sorry.

As far as voting rights go where we basically have none, do you think that the NRL in protecting their product could make it a requirement for clubs members ( season ticket holders) to have a certain percentage of voting rights on the board, most likely they would have to be more financial and be called associate members or something like that.

I have absolutely no clue how this would work but to have supporters being completely shut out is puzzling.

It's no wonder Mike and a lot of other forumers are complaining about the board. It's the feeling of not being able to do anything about the clubs problems which is at the core of ill feelings imo.

I basically pay to be a season ticket holder because there are a few perks that come with it like discounted tickets and merchandise. Though I must add that this year cap etc was pretty poor.

Whilst on merchandise, I wish the club had an elete clothing/merchandise line...real quality items that I would love to wear to dinner or a function. I wouldn't mind paying extra for top shelf stuff. I emailed the club with this idea but fell on deaf ears.

@crowsnest WT NRL club is owned by Wests Ashfield and they control the WT board by nominating the majority of board members. WA is controlled by 25 “debenture” holders of WA which is an invite only club of people. These debenture holders nominate the majority of board members of WA. This is all designed so that there is no way for anyone to change anything without the majority consent of the 25 debenture holders. There is no avenue for the NRL to intervene that I am aware of as it is the express design of the WA constitution and they are meeting all their obligations to hold the NRL license.

the only way that I could see any change would be if WA decided to sell a stake in WT to an outside party. Given WT and WA are both profitable entities I can’t see why WA would ever give up their privilege of owning a NRL club.

To be honest, I am not a fan of member voted boards for NRL clubs, I believe it is outdated and leads to instability of the club, yes I know we are unstable now.

@tigertownsfs very informative TT.

Garry has told me this before but you've gone into more detail.

These 25 “debenture members" are appointed or selected by WA? If so it's a fool proof way for the board to be untouchable isn't it?

Apart from what you've said, is there any legal ramifications if the NRL said stiff bickies, clubs can't have a licence unless season ticket holders are given a chance to apply for membership and a certain percentage is to be maintained. I'm probably not explaining myself correctly so excuse my ignorance. I just find it difficult that a club can ignore the majority of it's fan base or at least let them have a say, or do they....am I missing something.

My next question is how do privately owned clubs go about things? I would imagine they would run it as they see fit meaning they select their own board and executives or are there stakeholders involved? Are the WT unique in this?

I'll check in tomorrow as the Hong Kong Sevens bekons 😁
