Former Raiders coach David Furner has signed on to join Tim Sheens' staff at the Tigers for next season.
Furner is regarded among the best assistant coaches in the game, having worked at the Knights and Bulldogs over the past two seasons.
Sheens and Furner are extremely close - the veteran coach brought Furner into first grade as a player in the early 1990s and then had him as an assistant when he coached the Kangaroos a decade ago.
Furner, whose father Don was the inaugural Raiders coach in 1982, also coached Canberra from 2009 to 2013.

My understanding is that Furner will be our defence coach.

WOW defensive coach for Newcastle and Dogs over the last few seasons ..that’s something to get excited about NOT!Sheens loves the boys club.
The missing piece of the puzzle. We'll probably win the whole thing now.
@helmesy So what happens with Cayless?
Moved on, along with Gardiner I think.

@helmesy not a big loss Cayless really. As for Gardiner he was a Madge man so moving on he is a bit of a loss
However I think Marshall farah and Furner are all good options

IF Furner had been involved with the defence at a successful club I'd feel a lot better about it

He was assistant coach at the cowboys in 2015 and was assistant coach at knights in 2020 when they made the 8.

Some hope then. Fingers crossed
- Furner will add nothing he is Sheens security blanket and there has to be at least one coach with accreditation .
