Continuing on in our series. I’m going to take Lawrence out of the picture and ask, aside from him, who are the best centres we’ve had?

A few names that come to mind:

Hill

McGuiness

Elford

Whatuira

Collis

Ayshford

Simona

Marsters

Leilua

Roberts

Its Whaturia and Ayshford for mine. Definitely a position we have struggled to fill successfully in recent times. Maybe one good one and one problem one but rarely 2 strong, reliable centres together.

Whatuira and Elford for me.

Just a weird anecdote to throw in regarding BJ Leilua. Despite once being a great centre, he was complete rubbish for us................BUT....one game I was at, it was an away game so probably against Parra or Roosters and we got a scrum about 20m out. Tigers stacked the short side and as a result only had three on a long open side and the opposition only had 3 defenders obviously. Leilua simply screamed onto a pass running from the back fence and was unstoppable to score the try. Such a great and simple move that was almost unstoppable and really used Leilua to his strngth. Typical of the Tigers that we never did it again.

Great player on his day, ordinary mostly for us. I’m glad you have one good memory, I’m struggling to recall any 😂
