Pretty comprehensive article with a big wrap on Hastings, but still tipping us to miss out on finals…

Although this had me scratching my head…

”they have a star in the making in Joe Ofahengaue.”

I think he meant Stefano.

@garry Whether he meant Stefano rather than Joffa,as he more than likely did, that is an inexcusable blunder for a so called professional journalist.Read the bloody thing and fact check it if you want to be taken seriously.Sloppy!

As for his declaration of the Luke Brooks rumours(to Newcastle)that just refuse to go away,Tim Sheens definitively put that one to bed.One of the first public statements he made on his arrival here. But now this “journalist” is intimating that the rumours persist.Says who?He might like to quote someone,or give us something concrete in order to support his assertions. How is releasing Luke to Newcastle mutually beneficial? It means we’re without a halfback, of which don’t just materialise overnight.

Recycled churn article in my view.

Brooks isn't going anywhere, this was all sorted at the start of the preseason. I don't put much weight in articles from zero tackle, their off contract list are good though.

Another article talking up Willaim Kei

Has anyone heard anything from the club? Do you think he might get first crack at centre?

I think we kinda need 1 or 2 bolters to emerge into the team and shake things up a bit

Top 8 2023

@frullens I was going to say the same thing about Kei. Where are these wraps coming from?

The other thing that I thought of when reading this article was in respect to gains/losses. Where has our cap money gone? We've had 3 of our biggest earners from last year leave (I note we still carry at least half Mbye contract)

From a dollars and cents perspective (excluding development contracts)

mbye -500   Hastings 350
packer -750   Gildart 350
leilua -650   Peachey 400
chee kam -250   Starford 200
Walters -200   Tupou 200
Outgoings -2350   Incomings 1500

These players re-signed last year (assumedly on upgraded contracts?)

Jacob Liddle (2023), Jock Madden (2022), Thomas Mikaele (2022), Zane Musgrove (2024), Alex Seyfarth (2023), Jake Simpkin (2024) Alex Twal

Have upgrades for these guys cost the club $800k against the cap?

The point Im trying to make, having had a scope around, was actually made elsewhere last september https://thesportingbase.com/nrl/madge-must-go-tigers-club-defining-mistake/

At that time I remember brent read reporting widely that we had $1.2mill to spend and had 3 roster spots left for 2022. Since then we added Peachey, Tupou and To'a.

Numbers do not add up.

We haven't spent our entire cap.

@garry how can we be sure of that?

Hoffman leaving opens up a roster spot but before that we had 30 contracted players. If we have had 30 contracted players but had not spent the full cap then either:

a) we don't have enough $$$ to get to the full limit?

or

b) the club can't attract players who can get us up to the cap?

If its the latter outcome its a pretty sad indictment on Madge's ability to get players through the door.

The recruitment team are currently looking towards filling the final roster spot but are prepared to wait for the right player. They are looking but are in no rush

A guy from the Eels with the initials ‘IP’ is just what we need.

We have enough money, for the past couple of years we haven't spent to our entire cap and have upgraded and frontloaded players to fulfil the cap spend. The club would have a significant amount left for spot 30, more than we will probably end up spending.

C) Nothing decent available (yet) to fill that spot from outside..
