NRL 2022: Forward pass technology edging closer to use after the NRL conducted after secret trials at the end of 2021
The NRL is edging closer to finding a solution to one of the game’s most vexing problems after conducting secret trials late last season, and further trials are planned for the pre-season.
The NRL secretly trialled forward pass technology at the end of last season and will take another step towards its introduction by conducting blind trials in coming weeks in the pre-season and women’s premiership.
News Corp can reveal the NRL carried out a series of clandestine trials with ball-tracking technology over the closing weeks of the 2021 premiership, the results kept a closely-guarded secret.
It is understood they plan to use another form of technology during the pre-season and the upcoming women’s premiership as they inch towards a final decision on whether to introduce more technology to the game.
The goal is to find the right process and then take a recommendation to the ARL Commission for their approval, potentially within the coming months with a view to its introduction as early as this year.
The alternative option, provided the right technology can be found, would be to finish this season and leave the commission to make a call over the off-season about whether to head down that path.

That is a stupid idea in my opinion.

Why Garry?

If your running and passing most balls passed backwards actually travel forward. It simple physics. Legal passes often are caught in front of where they were thrown, it's just that everyone is running forward it looks like it's moved backwards relative to the players running forward.
So actually ruling on forward passes is actually a very subjective thing, not something can be ruled by back and white technology.

Another area for them to stuff up, to be honest I want less interference in the game and not more. I would change the entire video review system if it was up to me.
In memory of Geoff Chisholm (1965-2022)
I would only let the video ref rule on the actually motion of scoring a try.
I.e did he put in down? Did he go out.
Not the try scoring play wher either review obstruction, potential knock on, etc
Less stoppages, technology, ref calls that no one understands.
If the ref didn't see it, play on....

I would just have Captains Challenge for try scoring decisions. Ref refs the game as if there is no Video Ref, if after the try is awarded or denied then the captain has 15sec to challenge the decision and that is the only time the Bunker has any role in the game.
In memory of Geoff Chisholm (1965-2022)
The less ‘in the moment’ officiating refs do, the worse they will be. They will lose the edge in making decisions on the run. We need to go back to allowing referees to make their own decisions, get rid of the bloody headset that just gives them too much info, and accept refs will referee differently. That’s what I reckon anyway
@tigersteve @garry agree.
It's weird how the game has gone so far the other way in trying to make it perfect.
It's the negative commentary and media.blowong up about every ref mistake.
If you accept it roughly evens out, it's so much more enjoyable to focus on the actual game instead of the ref
There's nothing better than riding the emotions of a try. Hate when it's ruined by 3 Min of video ref

If this eventuates they will need to redefine a forward pass me thinks. Anyone moving at a pace and throws a flat pass will effectively be throwing a forward pass, it's psychics. The ball will travel forward as a result, not relative to themselves or their team mates, relative to the ground. I can see this going very wrong.....
@mike agree
It's funny how this is not widely understood
Most passes are forward relative to the point of where they were first passed, but not technically forward as they were thrown backwards.
Exactly.
It really depends on what sort of pass your throw ...my spiral to my strong side always had a curve /loop ..almost had to throw it slightly forward if you were hitting a flat runner if it was more was travelling 6 +metres ...
The balls of today float around everywhere ...you really have to throw a pass flat and hard to stop it floating over any distance
I still maintain if we went back to old leather balls a lot of the forward pass issues go away
But the goal kickers would go bonkers lol
